The Ministry for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has distributed 300 outboard motors to fishermen in the Western Region.
With these subsidized outboard motors, the government and fishermen share the cost equally and it is to support the livelihood of the fishers and the fishing communities
Mrs. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development at the distribution of the outboard motors said government, is constructing landing sites in all the fishing regions across the country.
“Government has fishermen at heart and all these are to cushion you to work more and enhance your work; we are committed to the fisheries sector and we are doing all we can to ensure the fishing industry grows” she said.
Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, Western Regional Minister pointed out that currently, premix fuel is not a problem for fishermen in the country.
He announced that there are plans for some investors to construct Tuna Processing Factory in the region and this will offer employment opportunities for the youth.
He encouraged the fishermen to take good care of the outboard motors and use it for its intended purpose.
Nana Kofi Annan, Chief Fisherman of Axim said the presentation of the outboard motors is timely since the fishermen are about entering the peak season.
He expressed gratitude to the ministry and that these outboard motors will enhance their work effectively and efficiently.
Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Omanhene of Essikado Traditional Area urged the ministry to consider supporting fishmongers for the development of the fishing industry.
