Midway Hospital, a leading provider of quality primary and specialist healthcare, has launched its 45th anniversary celebration activities with renewed commitment to operational excellence.

This milestone marks over four decades of transformative impact on the health and well-being of the region, with a renewed commitment to operational excellence guiding its future.

Founded as a humble clinic at Abeka Junction, Midway Hospital has undergone a remarkable journey. From those modest beginnings, it has evolved into a trusted, full-service healthcare provider renowned for its warm, family-like atmosphere and dependable, high-quality care at its new Achimota base.

The hospital credits its sustained progress and positive reputation directly to the commitment of its team and the steadfast support of the community and its partners. The anniversary celebrations will recognize this shared history and collaborative spirit.

Medical Director of Midway Hospital, and daughter of the founder, Dr Gifty Quarshie-Ngissah, indicated that this 45th anniversary is a testament to the enduring vision of the founder and the unwavering dedication of every single staff member and partner who has walked through our doors over the decades.

“The strong values instilled at our founding – compassion, community focus, and clinical excellence – remain the bedrock of Midway Hospital. They fueled our growth from a small clinic to the comprehensive institution we are today, and they inspire our renewed pledge to operational excellence as we serve future generations,” she said.

Greater Accra Regional Director, the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Robert Amesiya, commended Midway Hospital for the transformative impact over the past four decades and counting. He took the opportunity to call on the government to channel more resources into helping high-performing private health institutions to improve national healthcare outcomes.

He said institutions like Midway Hospital that demonstrate operational efficiency to expand and offer specialised services deserve more support to help the nation achieve universal health coverage.

“Not every private hospital can boast of such success, but for what Midway has achieved, they deserve a lot of support. We need policies that empower well-performing private providers to complement the public sector in bridging the healthcare access gap,” he said.

The anniversary event, themed “Honouring a legacy, advancing a vision: 45 years of transforming lives,” also saw the unveiling of a bust in honour of the hospital’s founder, Dr Joseph Ameni Quarshie, a Germany-trained obstetrician-gynecologist who delivered excellent, indiscriminatory service for decades.

The late Dr. Quarshie founded Midway Hospital in 1980 with a vision to provide dignified and comprehensive care to underserved communities. He passed away in 2020 but left behind a legacy of discipline, compassion, and dedication to medical excellence.

Dr Quarshie-Ngissah paid tribute to her father’s enduring impact and outlined significant strides the hospital had made over the last five years. She said the facility had undergone a major transformation, including the introduction of services such as dialysis, advanced orthopaedics, endoscopy, fertility treatment, and a new emergency unit.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, several community-focused activities have been lined up, including Free NHIS registration for residents of Okaikoi North and surrounding areas at the Church of Pentecost, Abofu Worship Centre, on 6th August 2025; Staff Thanksgiving Service at Bethany Methodist Church, Dzorwulu, on 10th August 2025, and all year – free corporate & school health education.

The Chairperson of the anniversary celebration, Mrs. Freda Yahan Duplan, described Midway Hospital as “a beacon of hope and a testimony of what can be achieved through faith, discipline, and hard work.” She called on corporate Ghana to support institutions like Midway as part of a broader investment in human capital and national development.

Mrs. Duplan encouraged Midway’s leadership to remain true to its founding values while embracing technology and innovation to improve service delivery. She also urged policymakers to include private health institutions in the national healthcare dialogue.
