Poetry Corner with Kwesi BISSUE: One Day Long

0

On the dawn of the new day

The day began so early

So early in the days of the new-born

When the cry of the new-born rang out…so childishly

To sound in the ears of the new day

A new birth

A new birth day

To beat the sounds everywhere

The new-born sang loudly so

So to announce a new arrival

So to begin to breathe the air…everywhere

The morn grew into full brightness

And grew brighter for better

The new life grew in all its strength

At its length

And the new life knew better for brighter

Further into full brightness

The noon after the day

Offered open arms to a new life;

Open opportunities

Palpable possibilities

To the life alive…in its fulness

In the noon of the day

The noon after the day

Proffered the means to a new life;

Diversity of suggestions

Legions of solutions

To the life alive…in its fulness

In the noon of the day

Soon the noon’s end drew near…so fast

But the noon’s end was not the end of the day

It was the life alive that grew

Older

Wiser

Stronger

So fast

It grew older…to grow the trees into a forest

It grew wiser…to weave the canes into a basket

It grew stronger…to push the plugs to build a rocket

Now it was the life alive that drew nearer to its end

Even the evening turned up so early

Turned out the sun…so abruptly

Turned on the lights…so dimly

So early

So the eyes of the life that lived

May see in vain…so early.

The night turned up unlit…so gloomily

Turned out the stars

And the moon

Turned on the clouds…so soon

And turned off the lights…so completely

Ultimately

Death…untimely!
