The Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Ghana has lauded President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, for appointing distinguished women leaders to the governing board of the Ghana Maritime Authority.
In a statement issued by the association, WISTA Ghana commended the Government of Ghana for rocognizing the expertise and contributions of women in shaping maritime policy, describing the appointment as a progressive steps towards gender inclusion and leadership in the maritime sector. They congratulated Jemilat Jawulaa Mahama on her appointment as the Board Chairperson of the Ghana Maritime Authority, the first female to assume this prestigious role.
Ms. Mahama currently serves as the General Secretary of WISTA International and a former President of WISTA Ghana. She also holds the position of Vice President of the Ghana Chamber of Shipping.
“We proudly congratulate Jemilate Mahamah, she is recognized for her exceptional competence, resilience, and leadership in navigating diverse maritime fields. Having over 20years experience in the industry. Her career competence is indeed impressive, overcoming challenges and breaking barriers in a male-dominated industry.” They also congratulated Esther Gyebi Donkor on her appointment as a board member of same institution.
“A founding member of WISTA Ghana, Ms. Donkor brings over three decades of professional expertise, having served in various leadership roles at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), where she rose to the position of Deputy Director General of Operations until her retirement in 2024,” the statement said.
She is also known for her leadership in regional networks including the Women’s Network of Port Sector of West and Central Africa and Port Ladies Association. She also earned the nickname ‘Madam Papperles’, for her pivotal role in implementing the paperless port system which was officially introduced in 2017.
