The national U-20 team has been drawn alongside arch-rival Nigeria and Benin in Group A of the third edition of the WAFU Zone B U-20 Cup of Nations, Accra 2025.
Ghana and Nigeria will face off again after the latter claimed the 2024 U-20 WAFU B Cup of Nations Championship title following their 2-1 win over Ghana.
The competition will feature seven West African nations, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
The draw for the group stage of the WAFU B U-20 Cup of Nations took place in Abidjan – Côte d’Ivoire, last Friday, June 20, 2025. The seven participating countries in the tournament are host Ghana, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, Nigeria and Togo.
Group B comprises Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger and Togo. This tournament is a major event for West African youths, providing a vibrant and competitive sporting atmosphere for the zone.
The tournament, originally designed to feature both WAFU Zone A & B, has been redesigned to involve only Zone B due to some technical challenges.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from July 10 to 23, 2025 at the GFA Technical Centre in Prampram. This event serves as a key platform for nurturing young talent in the West African sub-region.
The WAFU B Secretariat, in a statement, said: “This period has been selected to ensure the smooth running of the competition, following the necessary adjustments after the postponement of the U20 Boys’ Cup of both WAFU A & B. We aim to provide the best possible experience for all seven of our member associations”.
The inaugural tournament was held in 2018, with eight teams drawn into two groups of four. WAFU Zone B member teams were Ivory Coast, Niger, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Nigeria and Benin.
Mali from Zone A replaced Côte d’Ivoire, which had withdrawn before the tournament; and Senegal from Zone A were invited to make the numbers up to eight. Senegal won this maiden edition after defeating Nigeria in the final.
