Accra Metropolitan University (formerly Laweh University College) has officially constituted its inaugural Governing Council, marking a pivotal step in its transformation into an autonomous higher education institution in Ghana.

The newly-formed council, composed of distinguished experts across academia, governance and industry, will oversee the university’s strategic direction for the next four years as it seeks to achieve academic excellence.

This development follows the institution’s grant of a presidential charter in December 2024, positioning it to redefine tertiary education in the country.

The council is chaired by Dr. Kingsley Fletcher, the Suapolor of the Se (Shai) Traditional Area – with the title Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, with Transforming Teaching, Education and Learning (T-TEL) Executive, Dr. Sam Awuku as the co-chair.

Council members include Executive Director, African Education Watch (Eduwatch), Kofi Asare; Representative of Subscribers, Lawyer Victor K. Adawudu; Academic Rep, Dr. Rafiq Daudi; University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Faculty member, Dr. Munkaila Abdulai; and Director of Research and Academic Planning at the Association of African Universities (AAU), Prof. Jonathan Chuks Mba.

Other members include Prof. Goski Alabi, Dr. David Wuako, International Academic Leader, Prof. Amany El-Sharaf, Dr. Joshua Mallet, and Jesse Martey as the student representative.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the council’s swearing-in ceremony, Prof. Goski Alabi emphasised that having met the stringent criteria established by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Accra Met is on course to introduce eight new academic programmes to its portfolio, including a PhD in Leadership.

She stressed that as an autonomous institution, Accra Met pledges to uphold the highest standards of academic excellence, innovation and service to our society.

The council chair, in his remarks, said: “We wish to make the university very disruptive in the market. This is a significant development in the history of the institution and an unfolding of a new chapter in the history of the university”.

Our plan for the future appears to be an ambitious goal, but we are ready for the task.

The council’s vision is to make Accra Met a world-class university, fostering leadership innovation.

Accra MET University is open to give an opportunity to every individual, irrespective of their background, to access higher learning.

Kofi Asare, in an interview, mentioned that the goal is to create an extraordinary university capable of training graduates who meet the demands of the future.

“Our university will give opportunities to not just people with some basic or secondary education, but also those with unique skills and who seek to develop,” he said.

Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I revealed that his scholarship scheme, the ‘Drolo Scholarship’, will be extended to help all needy but brilliant students to gain access to tertiary education at Accra Met.

Tribute to founding father

The council paid tribute to Prof. Joshua Alabi, the institution’s founding father, recognising his foundational role. “Prof. Alabi’s contributions are immeasurable. He remains a guiding force and a national asset,” said Dr. Fletcher.
