It was an action-packed weekend for women’s football in Ghana, as the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League and Women’s FA Cup finals were staged at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra on Sunday.
Police Ladies made history by securing their first-ever Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League title with a commanding 2-0 victory over defending champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies.
In a final played under heavy rain, both sides approached the game with determination. Police Ladies appeared more composed in the early stages and broke the deadlock in the 27th minute through forward Jane Ayieyam, who finished off a spell of sustained pressure.
Ampem Darkoa responded strongly in the second half, pressing for an equaliser, but were consistently denied by a well-organised Police defence. With the game nearing its conclusion, Victoria Teye Williams doubled Police Ladies’ lead in the 89th minute, sealing a famous win.
The result ended Ampem Darkoa’s recent dominance in the league. The two sides last met in the 2017 Super Cup, where Ampem Darkoa triumphed 2-0.
Sunday’s triumph not only delivered Police Ladies their first league title but also secured their qualification for next season’s CAF Women’s Champions League — a deserved reward for their consistency throughout the campaign.
Faith Ladies claim Women’s FA Cup in extra-time thriller
Faith Ladies were crowned Women’s FA Cup champions after edging Jonina Ladies 2-1 in a dramatic final that went into extra time.
The match started cautiously, with both sides testing each other without finding a breakthrough. The first half ended goalless, and despite some chances in the second half, neither team could find the back of the net, forcing the contest into extra time.
Jonina Ladies struck first through Joyce Atimbila in the 97th minute, but their lead was short-lived as Erica Obeng Apreku equalised just a minute later. Apreku returned to score again in the 112th minute, completing her brace and turning the game in Faith Ladies’ favour.
Jonina Ladies pressed for a second goal, but Faith Ladies held their ground to secure a memorable cup victory.
GFA presents buses to Ampem Darkoa and Hasaacas Ladies
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has presented buses to Ampem Darkoa Ladies and Hasaacas Ladies, champions of the Northern and Southern Zones of the 2023/24 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League respectively.
The presentation forms part of the GFA’s Bus Acquisition Strategy aimed at easing transportation challenges and boosting club operations.
Speaking at the event, GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku reiterated the association’s commitment to supporting clubs through strategic initiatives that promote sustainable development and long-term success.
The latest presentation follows a similar move in 2023, where buses were distributed to nine Division One League clubs, including Young Apostles FC, Techiman Heroes FC, Victory Club Warriors, Basake Holy Stars, New Edubiase FC, Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs, Vision FC, Okwawu United, and Hohoe United.
These efforts underline the GFA’s ongoing support for Ghanaian football at all levels, particularly women’s football, which continues to grow in strength and popularity.
