The General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), Morgan Ayawine has noted that the country’s premier investment bank, the National Investment Bank (NIB)has played, and continues to play a significant role within the investment space of the financial sector of the economy.
“The Bank’s track record of pre-finncing and supporting many industries and businesses with start-up capital is indisputable and commendable”, he stated.
However, the misfortune of falling into a distressed state among other banks and financial institutions in the recent past, culminated in attempts to merge it with the Agricultural Development Bank, a marriage which Mr. Ayawine described as ‘quite incongruous’ was averted through strong advocacy and representations made by the ICU to government to recapitalise NIB rather than the proposed merger.
Consequently, he expressed much appreciation for the bailout the government advanced to NIB in the past year, enabling it to stand on its feet to play its traditional role of supporting businesses and industry.
Mr. Ayawine made these preliminary remarks when he inaugurated the newly elected Professional and Managerial Staff Union (PMSU) of NIB last week at the NIB premises in Accra.
He impressed on the management of the bank to take the union in absolute confidence and trust them to contribute their quota in driving the hope and aspirations of the Bank.
“Indeed, the contribution of the PMSU and the local union over the years to the success of the Bank’s operations, cannot be over emphasized”, he added.
In recognition of that effort, ICU selected the immediate-past PMSU Chairman, Davis Narh to be honoured at this year’s ICU National May Day Award.
Ayawine said the benefit of trade unions within organizations s realized through galvanization of the workforce for increased productivity which is a pre-requisite for achieving organisational goals.
He admonished the new PMSU executives to be selfless, honest and diligent in the discharge of their duties, as well as, being circumspect and sincere in relationship with the mangement of the bank.
The newly-inducted PMSU officers are Robert Afrifa Twumasi, Chairman, Prince Kofi Adzah, Vice Chairman, Mary Donkor Kwobuk, Secretary, Obed Kwasi Ganyaglo, 1st Trustee, Adjoa Amankwah Eduah, 2nd Trustee, Michael Kuuku Abban, Youth Representative and Irene Osei Tanoh, Women’s Representative.
