The Rotary Club of Accra-Airport is celebrating 25 years of transformative service and impactful community development, marking a significant milestone since its chartering on 18th April, 2000.
From its humble beginnings with 22 charter members, the club has grown into a dynamic 71-member organisation, embodying the Rotary ideal of “Service Above Self”.
Founded under the leadership of Charter President Harry Owusu and Past District Governor Adotei Brown, the club quickly earned the moniker “The Millennium Club” – a symbol of its vision and vitality at the turn of the century.
Record of impact
Over the past two and a half decades, the club has implemented a range of humanitarian projects, including the rehabilitation of the Frafraha Children’s Home, where school uniforms were also provided.
The club has also undertaken the renovation of the Children’s Ward at the 37 Military Hospital, introducing a play area, library and family lounge to enhance paediatric care.
Other notable initiatives include the long-running Sugar Project – a diabetes awareness campaign launched in collaboration with Joy FM and Millennium Promise – as well as the Sickle Cell Project at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, which saw major upgrades to patient care infrastructure and furnishing.
Further, the renovation of the Akotoshie School Block and the establishment of new Rotary and Interact Clubs reflect the club’s sustained focus on education and youth empowerment.
Philanthropy and recognition
In recognition of its outstanding philanthropic efforts, the club achieved 100 percent Paul Harris Fellow status during the 2018/2019 Rotary year, with each member contributing a minimum of US$1,000 to the Rotary Foundation.
By 2025, the club’s cumulative contributions to the foundation had reached US$461,650, with several members recognised as Major Donors for individual contributions of US$10,000 or more.
