Ghacem Limited has once again fulfilled its pledge of supporting deprived communities in the country with free cement bags for their health and educational infrastructure with the commencement of the 2024/2025 Ghacem Cement Foundation(GCf) donation ceremonies.
Established in 2002 as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) to assist deprived communities to improve their health and educational infrastructure, the foundation has since its inception donated a total of 725,060 bags of cement valued at a cost of Ghc 58 million.
Institutions across the country grouped into Southern (Central, Western, Western North, Volta, Oti, Eastern and Greater Accra Region) and Northern (Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East, Upper West, Bono East, Bono, Ahafo and Ashanti Region) sectors are given the free bags as a support package for their various infrastructural projects.
Southern Sector event
This year’s Southern Sector donation ceremony was held in Cape Coast at the Ridge Royal Hotel on 3rd April, 2025. A total of 21,240 bags was donated to selected health and educational institutions captured under the Southern sector.
The Northern Sector, which consists of the Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East, Upper West, Brong East, Brong, Ahafo and Ashanti Region, will also receive its estimated allocation of 9,680 bags at a similar donation ceremony in Tamale next month May.
Welcoming guests at for the Southern sector ceremony, the Managing Director of Ghacem, Dr. Frank Huber reaffirmed that GHACEM’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives remain a key focus, particularly through the GHACEM Cement Foundation and the company takes pride in this initiative, emphasizing its role in enhancing education and healthcare as the pillars of a thriving society.
“Investing in education and health makes the greatest impact. These two sectors are the foundation of every successful society, and that is what motivates us to sustain the GHACEM Cement Foundation.” He said, and commended community leaders including the various headmasters, and Medical Directors for their commitment to Ghana’s development through their participation in the Foundation’s initiatives. He urged them to remain strong partners of the GCF in driving progress.
Dr. Huber further emphasized the company’s broader mission beyond cement production. “We care about education, we care about health, and we want to make a difference,” GHACEM is not just a producer of cement; we are a responsible company committed to sustainability. Calling ourselves ‘the nation builder’ is not just a slogan but a promise to strive hard to be the backbone of Ghana’s development, and that is a commitment we intend to keep.”
Dr. Huber also highlighted GHACEM’s dedication to innovation, announcing an upcoming new cement product with the lowest CO₂ footprint in Africa. This development he underscored, aligns with the company’s efforts to lead the industry in eco-friendly and sustainable construction solutions.
Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI, Paramount Chief of Assin Kushea of the Owirenkyi Traditional area and Chairman of the foundation in his address expressed satisfaction with the impact the Foundation has made over the past 23 years.
“It is heartening to see how the GCF initiative has positively contributed to Ghana’s healthcare and education sectors. Reports from the GCF Secretariat confirm that past beneficiaries have used the cement for its intended purpose, leading to significant improvements in educational and healthcare infrastructure. This makes us proud as the purpose of this foundation has greatly been achieved”.
Nana Prah called on the nation to rally behind GHACEM to support its continued growth to sustain the GHACEM Cement Foundation. “In fact, GHACEM is the only cement manufacturing company in Ghana with such a deep passion for social responsibility, in addition to its commitment to producing the best quality cement and as such deserves a big support from the nation”.
Speaking on behalf of the GHACEM Cement Foundation Council Members, Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo reinforced the importance of developing human capital development through the Ghacem Cement Foundation.
“A nation cannot depend solely on its natural resources. Education and health are the twin pillars of sustainable development, empowering individuals, strengthening communities, and driving long-term progress as such the GCF is indeed a God sent initiative by Ghacem and as Council members we are proud to associate with this project”. Prof. Gadzekpo however encouraged applicants to adhere to the proper application criteria to ensure their projects receive the necessary support from the Foundation.
Beneficiaries
Most beneficiaries who spoke to the media were grateful to the GCF for coming into their aid to ensure education and health infrastructure were improved in deprived areas of the country. They made a passionate appeal to Government to institute policies and programs that will ensure the continuous success of Ghacem Ltd so as to sustain the Cement Foundation.
