Acting Chief  Executive Officer (CEO) -Petroleum Commission, Victoria Emeafa Hardcastle, has raised concern about the increasing incursion of fishermen into the exclusive zone at sea.

“These protocols are put in place for the protection of life before livelihood. The closer our fisherfolk get to the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, the greater risk they bring upon themselves,” she stated.

She raised the concern during a visit to the Western Regional House of Chiefs in Sekondi.

Mrs. Hardcastle explained that a single accident could force an FPSO to shut down, leading to significant financial losses for both the community and Ghana.

She further noted that international oil companies (IOCs) spend substantial amounts of money to have their vessels constantly patrolling the sea.

She therefore appealed to the chiefs to help educate fishermen on the importance of adhering to safety protocols.

“The ocean is big enough for everyone and the protocols must be observed. We need continuous community sensitisation to ensure these incidents do not occur,” she emphasised.

Obrempong Hemma Deyi XIV, Chief of Upper Dixcove, commended government for involving women and youth in governance.

He also praised the Petroleum Commission for regularly engaging chiefs in the region, particularly by providing updates on the oil and gas sector.

“We will do our best to convey your message on the issue of sea incursions to the fishermen. However, they have expressed concerns about the alleged use of light for fishing by some Chinese trawlers, which makes it difficult for them to catch fish. As a result, some of them are forced to venture close to the restricted area for their livelihood,” he said.

He stressed the need for discipline at sea to ensure safety and sustainability.

“We cannot allow lawlessness to prevail. There must be order at sea to protect all stakeholders. We are here to support you in ensuring the industry’s growth and sustainability,” he concluded.
