From the picturesque town of Cape Coast to the vibrant stages of global music, Bernard George Kobena Kyeremateng Brako—fondly known as Ben Brako—has harmonised the rhythms of his heritage with the beat of universal artistry.
Born on May 20, 1952 in Accra, Ben Brako’s life is a symphony of talent, passion and cultural pride, leaving an indelible mark as a musician, educator, entrepreneur and Pan-Africanist.
Early life and education
Raised in Ghana, Ben Brako’s formative years were steeped in discipline and creativity. He attended St. John’s Preparatory and Primary School, then St. Augustine’s College in Cape Coast (Augusco), where he graduated with the APSU Class of 1969.
His talent shone early as he sang to entertain his school mates, and subsequently became a member of the school band ‘Famous Flames’, where he laid the foundation for his life-long musical journey.
Ben’s academic pursuit led him to the University of Ghana, where he earned a BSc in Agricultural Economics. However, his artistic spirit drove him further to the University of East London, UK, where he studied Media and Communication—a fusion of science and art that shaped his multi-faceted career.
Musical journey
Ben Brako’s music blends soulful melodies with socially conscious lyrics, encapsulating the essence of African highlife and contemporary sounds. His songs, like ‘Meko Mekrom’ and ‘Mawie’, are classics from his 1987 hit album ‘BAYA’ that still resonate across generations, celebrating Ghanaian culture while addressing societal themes. With numerous albums and singles, his music bridges the past and present, earning him recognition as a cultural icon.
Professional ventures
In addition to his music, Ben Brako is a visionary entrepreneur. He is the Founder and CEO of We R Us, a charity organisation focused on promoting African culture and identity. As Co-Founder and Deputy Director of Dream! Child Foundation, he is dedicated to empowering the youth, channelling his passion for nurturing talent and leadership.
Teaching and leadership
Ben’s career also includes a stint as a teacher at Achimota School, where he inspired young minds with his wealth of knowledge and creativity. His commitment to education and community development reflects his Pan-Africanist ideals, emphasising unity, self-reliance and cultural preservation. He also had stints working with Alpha (WA) lines, Kwaw Ansah’s Film Africa and Commercial Consultancy Services.

Ben has faced personal losses, mourning his brothers Peter and James, and his mother Ruth, whose legacies continue to inspire him.
