IES celebrates members’ appointments to EPA, PURC

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has congratulated two of its board members, Nana Ama Klutse and Dr. Shafic Suleman, on their appointments to key roles in Ghana’s energy and environmental sectors by the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.

Mrs. Klutse, a renowned physicist, an astute academic leader, and a dedicated advocate for climate resilience and environmental sustainability, has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).



In a congratulatory letter, the Board Chair of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nafi Chinery, said, “On behalf of the Board of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), I am delighted to extend my heartfelt congratulations to you on your appointment as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana.

“Your leadership as the Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations uniquely positions you to bring transformative leadership to the EPA,” she added.

Mrs. Chinery mentioned that her outfit is confident that her wealth of experience in climate science, environmental policy, and sustainable development will play a pivotal role in advancing Ghana’s environmental agenda. “As a valued member of the IES Board, your contributions have always exemplified excellence, vision, and dedication. We have no doubt that your leadership at the EPA will further enhance Ghana’s global reputation in environmental management and sustainable development,” she noted.

She pledged the board’s full support and encouragement as she assumes this critical responsibility, adding that they look forward to witnessing the positive impact of her leadership at the EPA, encouraging her to remain confident that she will exceed expectations in her new role.

Dr. Suleman, on the other hand, has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). This prestigious appointment comes as part of his exceptional expertise and profound contributions to the energy sector.

According to Mrs. Chinery, “Your distinguished background in energy and petroleum economics, energy policy and law, sustainability, climate, and risk management uniquely positions you to lead the PURC in shaping policies that will transform Ghana’s utility landscape. Your deep understanding of the complex dynamics of the energy sector and your commitment to sustainability are precisely what is needed to drive innovation, efficiency, and equity in the regulation of public utilities.”

She noted that as a valued member of the IES Board, his insights and leadership have always been a source of inspiration and guidance, adding that they have no doubt these qualities will impact positively on his new role, where his leadership will be pivotal in ensuring the affordability, reliability, and sustainability of utility services for all Ghanaians.

“Please be assured of the unwavering support and goodwill of your colleagues at IES as you embark on this important journey. We are confident that your tenure at PURC will not only advance the Commission’s objectives but also contribute significantly to Ghana’s energy sector,” said Mrs. Chinery.

Both appointments have been hailed as a significant boost to Ghana’s efforts to promote sustainable development and environmental protection.
