The African Airlines Association (AFRAA) has unveiled a dedicated Route Intelligence Portal aimed at enhancing network efficiency for African airlines. The launch, a major highlight of the 56th Annual General Assembly (AGA) held from November 17 to 19, 2024, signals a significant step toward strengthening the continent’s aviation sector.
The Route Intelligence Portal, developed in collaboration with African market intelligence provider Milanamos, offers data-driven insights to help airlines identify opportunities for expansion and optimize routes.
Key features include traffic demand analysis, revenue forecasting, and insights into underserved markets. The portal is expected to aid airlines in expanding their networks globally and competing more effectively.
Addressing delegates, Eng. Yehia Zakaria, Chairman of EgyptAir Holding Company and 2024 AFRAA President, emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration in driving industry growth.
“Strengthening our partnerships is essential. By sharing resources and aligning strategies, we can reduce costs, enhance operational efficiency, and expand our networks,” Zakaria said.
The 56th AGA, held under the theme “Transform and Develop the Airline Industry in Africa,” brought together over 600 delegates from 60 countries. Discussions covered pressing issues such as aircraft financing, hub transformation, sustainability, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Delegates also explored pathways for adopting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to meet environmental goals.
AFRAA Secretary General Abdérahmane Berthé highlighted the recovery of African airlines from pandemic-related disruptions, with many surpassing pre-pandemic performance levels. “This resilience underscores our industry’s strength and adaptability,” he stated, adding that tools like the Route Intelligence Portal are crucial for future growth.
In addition to the portal launch, the assembly recognized outstanding achievements in the industry. Ethiopian Airlines was awarded “Airline of the Year – Global Operations” for its strong financial performance, while Kenya Airways and Eswatini Air were acknowledged for their improvements in profitability and intra-Africa connectivity, respectively.
The assembly concluded with the election of Kenya Airways as Chairman of the AFRAA Executive Committee and TAAG Angola as President of the Association. TAAG Angola will host the 57th AGA in Luanda in 2025.
Reflecting on the event’s outcomes, Berthé stated, “Our vision, leadership, and collaboration will ensure the success of Africa’s air transport industry. The launch of the Route Intelligence Portal exemplifies our commitment to building a stronger, more sustainable aviation ecosystem.”
The initiative underscores AFRAA’s dedication to innovation and collaboration, key drivers for transforming Africa’s aviation industry to meet growing demands.
