In a recent speech at the Summit of the Future in New York, President Nana Akufo-Addo addressed the challenges facing the world today and stressed the need for multilateral solutions.

His address drew attention to Africa’s plight in the ongoing climate crisis and called for a collective response to global issues that transcend national borders.

A Global Family Beyond National Interests

President Akufo-Addo began by emphasising that we are all members of a global family, united by shared destinies rather than divided by narrow national interests.

“The future is not distant,” he stated, asserting that today’s decisions will shape generations to come. The summit’s theme, “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” encapsulates this collective responsibility.

In a divided world, the President reminded us that isolationism leads to failure. This sentiment was poignant in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the interconnectedness of nations. As countries grappled with the crisis, it became clear that no nation could shield itself from the chaos, yet the aftermath has seen a resurgence of nationalism and isolationism.

Climate Justice: A Pressing Concern

President Akufo-Addo’s address focused on the climate emergency, a crisis threatening humanity, particularly in vulnerable regions like Africa. Despite contributing the least to global emissions, Africa bears the brunt of climate change, facing devastating impacts. The President’s call for climate justice was a plea for fairness and a demand for an economic system that works for everyone.

“How does one adapt to famine or build resilience when farmers cannot predict the seasons?” he asked, highlighting the absurdity of expecting vulnerable populations to weather the storm of climate change without support.

The message was clear: Africa cannot continue to bear the financial burdens of a crisis it did not create.

The Moral Imperative of Equality

Another critical point was the stark reality of extreme poverty. With over 700 million people—8.57% of the global population—still living in extreme poverty, the moral imperative for change is undeniable. The pandemic exacerbated inequalities, pushing millions into dire circumstances while the wealth of the richest soared.

“This is unsustainable, and it is immoral,” President Akufo-Addo declared, calling for a new global economic order that prioritizes inclusivity and equity. He emphasized the necessity for systems that uplift the most vulnerable.

A United Front for Tomorrow

President Akufo-Addo concluded by reaffirming the need to return to the founding principles of the United Nations: cooperation, solidarity, and a shared commitment to peace. The UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals serve as a charter for humanity, but their fulfillment requires a concerted effort from all nations.

The path forward lies not in isolation but in collaboration. The challenges are daunting, but united in our efforts, we can forge a better tomorrow for all. Ghana’s position, as articulated by President Akufo-Addo, serves as a call for global action—one that seeks fairness, justice, and a sustainable future for every member of our global family.
