MTN launches 15 years of MoMo existence

MTN Ghana, has launched 15 years of Mobile Money (MoMo) existence in Ghana on the theme “Empowering Communities – Celebrating 15 years of Progressive Financial and Digital Inclusion”.

The launch, at the Takoradi Market Circle Office of MTN attracted market women, agents and merchants, customers, corporate organisations among others to share their experience on the use of MoMo.



Solomon Hayford, the Head, Business Intelligence and Decision Support, Mobile Money Limited at MTN in an address read for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MoMo, Shaibu Haruna called for more collaboration and partnership in expanding Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem.

Saying, Ghanaians must continue to embrace innovation and growth that transforms lives, accelerates socio-economic inclusion and creates opportunities for all.

He said this at the market launch of Mobile Money Limited’s 15th anniversary celebration in Takoradi.

He said MTN, will keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible, explore modern technologies and create solutions that meet the changing needs of their valued customers and Ghanaians.

Mr. Hayford explained that MoMo, was born out of a vision, to democratize access to financial services, adding that, “over the years, this concept has evolved, and MoMo has become an indispensable part of everyday life for millions of Ghanaians.

He said Ghana, is currently one of the fastest growing markets in Africa for digital payments.

“The growth, has been influenced by the growing adoption of e-commerce and mobile payments by many, due to the convenience and safety of the service” he said.

According to him, MoMo is not just about sending money and making payments nowadays but rather, has expanded into other critical aspects of daily financial needs such as offering loans, insurance, international remittance and investments among others.

Mr. Hayford stated that despite the fleet chalked, MoMo is still faced with fraudulent activities and called for collaborative efforts to tackle the canker. He said, though mobile connectivity continues to improve, there are still some coverage gaps especially in rural and remote areas.

“MTN, will continue to invest in digital infrastructure to promote widespread connectivity in order to expand the frontiers of digital financial inclusion.

The Senior Manager of the South-West Business District, Prince Owusu Nyarko said “15 years in the life of any business is a milestone worth celebrating.

He attributed the success of MoMo in Ghana to the continuous support and commitment of its customers.

“Since its launch in 2009, the story of MoMo reflects the changing landscape of driving financial inclusion and the cashless society agenda” he said.

Activities earmarked for the celebrations include market launch, float through key streets across the country, New Service Launch, Customer promotion, MoMo Fraud campaign, Skills training for SMEs and Awards night to reward various stakeholders for their performance over the period.
