The Governing Council, Tamale Technical University (TaTU), has appointed Professor Bashiru Imoro Ibn Saeed as the university’s Vice-Chancellor (VC).
He became the second VC since the institution attained university status after its conversion from a polytechnic.
Prof. Bashiru’s appointment, which takes effect from July 1, 2024, will see him serve a four-year term after current VC Prof Abass Braimah’s term of office ends on June 30, 2024.
Prof. Bashiru contested seven other candidates – of which four were from the university, two from the University for Development and another two from the University of Ghana – and was chosen based on his competency during his term office as Pro VC.
Council Chair Dr. Abdulai Salifu and the university’s Registrar, Alhaji Yakubu Iddrisu, confirmed this to the B&FT and said the decision was taken by the TaTU Council unanimously at its eighth governing council meeting.
Prof. Bashiru is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and academician who is well-known for his scholarship and dedication to education while serving as the university’s Pro-VC.
Aside from his role as Pro-VC, Prof. Saeed also served as Director of Tamale Technical University Data Science Laboratory (TaTU -LISA) and a Country Coordinator of the International Statistical Literacy Project (ISLP).
The Alumni and entire university community were excited to hear about the appointment, and therefore pledged support for the new VC to achieve the institution’s set goals.
According to some staff members, Prof. Bashiru during his tenure as Pro-VC was able to raise the number of faculty from just four to eight – with an unprecedented record of developing 38-degree programmes, which is the highest amount by any technical university in Ghana.
He also developed 18 post-graduate programmes and brought three distance educational centres to fruition at Wulensi, Yendi and Walewale in the Northern and North-East Regions respectively.
Prof. Bashiru in an interview expressed gratitude to the Council, Committee and staff for their support, and assured of working with staff to enhance quality education at the university.
