Société Générale Ghana, in partnership with Melcom, has inaugurated a 1,262KWP Grid-Tie Rooftop Solar PV system at Melcom’s Spintex Branch.

With funding exceeding GH¢13million from Société Générale Ghana, the project underscores the bank’s strong commitment to sustainable finance and renewable energy.

The installation of the solar power system is expected to substantially reduce the electricity costs of Melcom’s Spintex branch by up to 35 percent. This initiative not only signifies a significant investment in renewable energy but also highlights the mutual dedication of both companies to combatting climate change.

During the launch at Spintex in Accra, Hakim Ouzzani, the Managing Director of the Bank, emphasised that solar energy presents one of the most promising solutions for mitigating the environmental impact of conventional energy sources. He further stated that harnessing the abundant power of the sun not only reduces carbon emissions, but also lays the groundwork for a more sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure.

Mr. Ouzzani reiterated his organisation’s commitment to transitioning toward a low-carbon economy and pledged ongoing support for organisations willing to make positive transitions like this.

“At SG Ghana, we recognise the pressing need to transition toward a low-carbon economy. Hence, we take pride in supporting initiatives such as Melcom’s solar project, which aligns seamlessly with our core values of environmental stewardship and responsible investing.

“Moving forward, SG Ghana remains steadfast in its commitment to aiding our clients in achieving their sustainability goals and fostering positive environmental change.

“We understand that combatting climate change necessitates concerted efforts, and we are privileged to contribute our part toward sculpting a more sustainable future for forthcoming generations,” he said.

He commended the leadership of the Melcom Spintex Branch for spearheading the adoption of renewable energy, adding that they have not only built a solar project but are investing in a brighter, cleaner and more sustainable future.

Group Director of Communications for Melcom, Godwin Avenorgbo, mentioned that the strategic initiative aims to reduce Melcom’s reliance on grid power and alleviate the burden on the national grid, contributing to a more sustainable energy ecosystem.

Mr. Avenorgbo highlighted that the solar plant at Melcom is poised to play a pivotal role in producing its own sustainable energy, thereby promoting a greener and more environmentally conscious business environment.
