Coming on the heels of the National Cybersecurity Awareness Month – celebrated by Ghana in October to raise awareness of digital security and empower people to protect their personal data – the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) held its maiden eLearning awareness campaign on October, 26.
Major-General Richard Addo Gyane, Commandant-KAIPTC, noted that in the last ten years online education and virtual learning have grown exponentially in importance and reach.
“Today’s learners want relevant, mobile, self-paced and personalised content to learn; and this need is fulfilled with the online mode of learning, whereby students can learn at their own comfort and requirement,” he stated.
The KAIPTC Commandant added that in an age when technology permeates every aspect of our lives, it is no surprise that it has revolutionised how we learn and develop.
“From free access to knowledge to fostering personalised learning experiences, technology has crystalised a digital blossoming of learning and development.”
Major-General Addo Gyane observed that the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a profound shift in the landscape of education and training – pushing for an accelerated adoption of digital technology in the academic and policy spaces.
“This rapid transformation necessitated educational institutions such as KAIPTC to swiftly pivot toward online teaching and training, making the most of technological resources at their disposal.
While KAIPTC had already been involved in eLearning, this opportunity empowered the Centre to underscore its standing as a Centre of Excellence by introducing pertinent eLearning courses tailored to specific needs of its target audience.”
It is against this background that KAIPTC, with funding support from EPSAO and the Norwegian government, organised a four-day eLearning Awareness Campaign. It was supported by GIZ through the ECOWAS Peace and Security Architecture and Operations Project (EPSAO) and the Norwegian government, with funding by the German Government and in part co-funded by the European Union.
Since the first KAIPTC eLearning course launch in 2020, eLearning has recorded over 3,000 participants enrolling on the various available eCourses.
This suggests that eLearning presents KAIPTC with a dynamic and plausible means of delivering training and contributing to achieving strategic objectives – such as ensuring financial sustainability and sustainability for the Centre’s postgraduate academic programmes and other knowledge-generation initiatives in peace and security
