The Firsy Sky Group has donated relief items worth GH¢1million to victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage.
This gesture was part of the company’s contribution to ameliorate the plight of persons affected by the unfortunate incident.
The donation took place on October 18, 2023 at Battor in the Volta Region, and was a response to government’s call on corporate Ghana to contribute and alleviate the suffering of flood victims.
Presenting the relief items in a brief ceremony, Group Chairman Mr. Eric Seddy Kutortse said the gesture forms part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and explained that the Group had no option but to intervene and contribute its quota to support the victims.
Mr. Kutortse pledged to implement the First Sky Group’s humanitarian policy by putting up a more modern and benefitting temporary structure to house the flood victims.
Items donated to the displaced flood victims at Battor include 800 bags of rice, 250 mattresses, 2,000 bottles of sunflower oil, 50 bags of 10kg sugar, 15 bags of 50kg sugar, 1,000 bags of sachet water, 10 boxes of milo and loaves bread.
The rest are boxes of sanitary supplies: soaps, shea pomade, sponges, sanitary pads, toothpaste, tooth-brushes, razor-blades and 100 buckets; bales of clothes, sweat-shirts, skirts and blouses for women, menswear, children’s clothing, bales of bedsheets and towels, and two bales of rubber slippers.
This latest gesture by First Sky Group adds to its list of philanthropic deeds – including the Group’s continuous support to kidney patients in the country, footing their bills for the past eight years.
Present at the ceremony with hospital authorities and staff of First Sky Group was Member of Parliament [MP] for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa; Member of Parliament for Central Tongu, Alex Gabby Hortordze; and DCE for North Tongu, Divine Osborne Fenu.
Other dignitaries present were Paramount Chief of Battor, Togbe Dzekle; Queenmother of Mepe, Mama Sreku; and Manklalo Borbordzi of Battor.
Background
The recent Akosombo and Kpong Dams spillage by the Volta River Authority [VRA] has displaced about 26,000 persons, and destroyed properties including hectares of farmlands worth millions of cedis.
The spillage by VRA, which records its first occurrence since 2010, has been attributed to excess water in both reservoirs due to the unusually high volumes of rainfall that occurred this year.
The affected communities are Battor, Tefle, Mepe, Sogakope, Adidome in the South, Central and North Tongu districts and Anlo – all in the Volta Region.
