The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has commenced an investigation into the withheld results of some schools and candidates of the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) 2022.
According to the Council, candidates who took part in the WASSCE for school candidates in the Central, Ahafo, Bono and Bono East Regions and had their results withheld for alleged involvement in examination irregularities are invited to the council’s Cape Coast branch office from 28th to 30th March 2023, and Sunyani branch office from 28th to 31st March 2023 respectively to assist the Council with its investigation.
At the release of 2022 WASSCE results, the examiner indicated that the subject results of some 3,845 candidates were cancelled for taking foreign material into the examination hall. The entire results of some 518 candidates were also cancelled for taking mobile phones into the examination hall.
It further mentioned that the entire results of some 117 candidates were also withheld pending the conclusion of investigations into alleged cases of impersonation detected during the examination.
The scripts of some other candidates from 179 schools in certain subjects are also being scrutinised for reported cases of collusion.
“Candidates who took part in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates 2022, in the Central and Ahafo/Bono/Bono East Regions, and have had their results withheld for alleged involvement in examination irregularities are being kindly invited to the Council’s Cape Coast branch office from 28th to 30th March 2023 and Sunyani branch office from 28th to 31st March 2023 respectively.
“The invitation is to assist the Council conclude investigations into the alleged irregularities. Candidates are being informed that their refusal to honour this invitation shall not preclude the Council from making a final determination on the cases,” the statement read.
WAEC emphasised that the fate of these candidates whose results have been withheld depends on the outcome of investigations, as the results may either be released or cancelled completely afterward.
“The withheld results of candidates may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations,” it stated.
