A Birmingham Airport-bound passenger plane declared an emergency in mid-air – after suffering a cracked windscreen.

Flight number BM1424, a BMI Regional service from Nuremberg, declared the emergency over Coventry, reports the Coventry Telegraph .

It landed safely at Birmingham shortly before 4pm on Thursday.

The twin-engined Embraer ERJ-145 was carrying 15 passengers at the time.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police says they were informed of the emergency being declared, but were not needed to attend.

A spokesman for BMI Regional said: “We can confirm that flight BM1424 from Nuremberg to Birmingham had declared a full emergency due to a cracked windscreen.

“All 15 passengers and crew aboard the aircraft are safe after it landed as scheduled at Birmingham Airport.

“The safety and comfort of all passengers and crew is paramount to bmi regional and as a standard precaution the pilots informed Air Traffic Control and the emergency services, all of which were on standby during landing.”

Engineers are currently investigating the cause of the damage to the windscreen.

The plane declared a ‘7700’ general emergency – declaring an emergency means the crew determines they have an “urgency” or “distress” situation.

“Urgency” means the crew is concerned about the safety of the flight and needs timely (but not necessarily immediate) assistance.
