The General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU-Ghana) has sent a heart-felt New Year message to members. A release in Accra signed by the General Secretary said:
“My colleagues in labour and cherished members of the great ICU, I welcome you to 2023 and wish you all the best of the year. The year 2023 has the prospect of being successful, and as workers and nation builders we must play our roles with zeal and dedication to make it successful.
“Having taken rest from the hard work that characterised our labour last year, let’s resume work with renewed vigour – which will enable us to help employers achieve their organisational goals in line with the ICU motto: ‘The Employers’ Vision, Our Union’s Concern’.
“We must therefore cooperate with our employers and rededicate ourselves to achieving our common vision in all aspects of nation-building. We cannot overlook the myriad of economic challenges that bedevilled us in the past year, but we can use them as a springboard to make a strong come-back to overcome those challenges and make this year’s economy viable in our quest for better livelihoods.
“It is only then that we can be seen as having fought a good fight. Hard work breaks no bones; let us therefore resolve to work harder for the achievement of our organisational and national goals for full recovery of the economy. Government should sustain the measures put in place to ensure stabilisation of the cedi against its major trading currencies to facilitate business transactions. Government should also stabilise costs of goods and services to bring down the economic hardship being inflicted on the citizenry.
“Similarly, steps should be taken for sustainable fuel price reduction to reflect in the country’s transportation fares.
“On this note, I once again salute you – gallant workers of Ghana – and urge you to continue giving your best in the discharge of your work for growth and development of mother Ghana.”
