To enhance Information Communication Technology (ICT) literacy and promote basic skills in computers among pupils in the Bolgatanga Preparatory Model School, an alumni group of the school has donated about 20 sets of computers and their accessories to retool the school’s computer laboratory.

With a student population of over 1,500 relying on only three computers at the computer laboratory for ICT studies, the exercise is believed to be timeous in mitigating the critical inadequate computer situation in which the school finds itself.

The project by the old students for their alma mater is valued at GH₵60,000 and forms part of their contribution as old students to equip the computer laboratory, in commemoration of the school’s 50th anniversary held on November 4, 2022.

The eight-member alumni group’s leader, Dr. Louis Nagali Koray, stated that the rationale behind resourcing the lab was to equip the children with, at least, basic computer skills; and also create a foundation to launch the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning experience to meet the demands of today’s evolving world.

“We realised that in the day and era of computerisation, it is very important to equip the children with basic Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills that enable young ones to explore opportunities which abound in the ICT or digital space. In this era, if you are not enthused with ICT you cannot fit into society; hence our gesture,” he said.

According to him, the alumni want their alma mater to become one of the best within the region that has a STEM foundation for its students.

“This is the face of the gesture upon which we will support more training and building development for the children and the country,” he added.

The alumni assured management of the school that they will do their best to resource it with stationery materials to curb the challenges confronting management in the upbringing of future leaders.

Dr. Koray advised management and students to take good care of the machines, so they achieve the purpose for which they were provided.

Headmistress for the Primary School, Catherine Assibi Nyaaba who received the computers on behalf of the school, expressed gratitude to the alumni for their support in equipping the computer lab with computers to enhance teaching ICT at the school.

She emphasised that management, students, teachers and parents appreciate the gesture toward training the young generation in technology, and will ensure students get the maximum benefit from it.

“In the era of technology, we need this equipment to enhance the teaching of Information and Communication Technology,” she said.
