Nominations have opened for the second edition of the Women in Mining and Energy Awards (WiMEA) 2022.

Nominations have opened for the second edition of the Women in Mining and Energy Awards (WiMEA) 2022.

This year’s event is scheduled to come off on Friday the 26th August, 2022 at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, Accra and is endorsed by the Ministry of Energy.

It seeks to among other things, create awareness on the need to increase female presence, development, participation and leadership in the mining and energy industries in the country.



The 2022 edition is on the theme: challenging stereotypes and conscious bias; supporting women in mining and energy to achieve global cohesion and leverage their game-changing collective strength.

Organised by Ianmatsun Global Services Limited, WiMEA seeks to bring national recognition to women and also encourage STEM education among the female gender.

It is also to acknowledge and celebrate the role, contributions and achievements of women in Ghana’s mining and energy industries. The awards is conceptualized to identify and publicly recognize women who have played significant roles and made key contributions to the two sectors.

“There is a mantra in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programme that says, you can’t be what you can’t see. We, therefore believe it is important we highlight the role that women play in these industries and recognize their outstanding contributions and achievements; by honouring them and sharing their success stories. We hope to encourage more young women to enter into these industries,” says Isaac Nana Adu-Gyamfi, Event Director.

He added that the awards also seeks to promote the UN Sustainable Development Goals, goal five – gender equality and goal 10, which talks about reducing inequalities.

“We believe this event creates the platform to reiterate the need to increase the awareness on the need to increase female presence, participation, development and leadership in the mining and energy industries in Ghana,” Mr. Adu-Gyanfi further said.

Categories

The awards are categorised into two, organizational/company and individual.

Under the organisational/company section, the categories include, Excellence in Diversity; Programmes and Performance Award; Employer of the Year Championing Diversity and Inclusion; Best Company in Women Empowerment Initiatives, Best Company in promoting STEM; Outstanding Support Services Company of the Year; Best Company in Mentorship Programmes and Initiatives and; Best Company in Climate Change Leadership Award.

Others are Best CSR Contribution in Energy Sector, Best CSR Contribution in Mining Sector, Best Company in Clean Energy Education and Empowerment and Best Women Network Group.

Individual categories include CEO of the Year (mining), CEO of the Year (energy), Chief Operations Officer of the Year (mining) and Chief Operations Officer of the Year (energy).

Others are: Outstanding Geo-chemical Engineer of the Year; Outstanding Electrical Engineer of the Year; Outstanding OMC CEO of the Year; Outstanding Support Services Leader of the Year; Best Woman Leader in Renewable Energy Sector; Rising Star in Mining; Rising Star in Energy; Exceptional Young Woman in Mining; Exceptional Young Woman in Energy; Outstanding Trade, Operator or Technician Award; Gender Diversity Champion (mining) and; Gender Diversity Champion (energy).

The rest are: Indigenous CEO of the Year (energy); Indigenous CEO of the Year (mining); Exemplary Leadership (energy); Exemplary Leadership (mining); Personality of the Year (energy); Personality of the Year (mining); STEM star of the Year (mining); STEM Star of the Year (Energy); HSE Personality of the Year; Local Content Manager of the Year; Sustainability and External, Relations Champion Award; Mentorship Excellence Award; Human Resource Excellence Award and; WiMEA Woman of the Year.
