Tullow Ghana Limited has donated 200 hundred pieces of Samsung Galaxy A7 tablets worth approximately US$100,000 to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) as part of efforts to support government’s newly launched COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

Commenting on the donation, Deputy Managing Director of Tullow Ghana, Cynthia Lumor, said the donation is part of the company’s shared prosperity drive to support government’s efforts in containing and controling the impact of COVID-19 in Ghana.

“As a responsible company, we consider this gesture as our commitment to government and the people of Ghana in the fight to end COVID-19. These SIM-enabled Internet-compatible tablets come with high capacity memory and processing chips to aid seamless and fast data-gathering during the registration phase of the national COVID-19 vaccination day campaign, and other subsequent vaccination exercises that will be conducted,” she said.

She reiterated that the items are to augment the information technology logisticswhich will be used during government’s national COVID-19 vaccination day and other vaccination campaigns.

Taking turns, Director General for the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma –Aboagye, said the donation will not only enhance efficiency to attain herd-immunity but also help in capturing the right information required.

“It will go a long way in making sure we are able to have an instant capture of the data onto our database. As we said yesterday, we have deployed about 30,000 health staff across the country for the exercise over the next five days, and each team will need 1 tablet.

“So, it will add to the number of tablets that we are deploying and we don’t have to write on paper before we come back to key-in those data; hence, this will be very helpful to help us capture data,” he said.

While he expressed utmost gratitude to Tullow Ghana, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye gave a clarion call for all stakeholders to collectively fight the global pandemic – adding that containing the virus will contribute to a buoyant economy.

“We are grateful to Tullow for their support, and we hope they continue to do more. For us, if COVID-19 is under control everybody benefits; and everyone is able to do their work as and when they need it, so we are very grateful for this gesture.

“We hope that other organisations and individuals will take a cue from this to support and fight this pandemic to bring it to an end,” he noted.

National Vaccination Days campaign

The Ghana Health Service has launched a five-day national vaccination campaign as part of efforts to increase uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The National Vaccination Days campaign, tagged ‘Operation 2.5 Million Doses in Five Days’, intends to target at least 20 percent of the 13.2 million population who remain unvaccinated.

All people 15 years and above, including pregnant women, are eligible to receive the vaccine. The campaign is also to help achieve the herd-immunity target of 20 million people.

As of February 01, 2022, Ghana’s COVID-19 confirmed cases stood at 156,920, from the about-2,207,069 tests conducted, while 1,395 people lost their lives to the disease and 153,649 recovered.
