VaT urges presidential aspirants to desist from tribal comments ahead of 2020 elections

The Voices against Tribalism (VaT), a social development, research and advocacy based Non-Governmental Organisation has urged all presidential aspirants to be decorous in their utterances when campaigning.

The group, in statement reminded the aspirants to first seek the unity of the country by avoiding acts that are divisive.

The chairman of VaT, Cephas K. Asimadi, who congratulated the presidential aspirants encouraged them to use peaceful words in their campaigns.



He stated that Ghana is a nation of people united by the diversity of culture and tribal identities.

This, he said should guide politicians to under no circumstances engage in tribal sentiments.

“We owe it a duty to protect the nation and its people from comments that divide us and pursue a path of inclusiveness, hope, peace, unity in diversity so that we can collectively advance the development of our country.”

“Good luck to all political parties, presidential aspirants and may Ghana emerge victorious after 7th December, 2020,” he added.

Mr. Asimadi condemned cases of isolated incidence of tribal intolerance in some parts of the country during the voters’ registration exercise which ended in August, 2020.

Calling for calm, he cautioned that inflammatory comments generate needless tension and undermines the peace and security of our beloved nation.

Mr. Asimadi congratulated all the presidential aspirants who were successfully shortlisted for the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.

“To those who were disqualified, we wish them the best of luck in their endeavours”.

The Electoral Commission on Friday 9th October, 2020 published the list of Presidential Aspirants for the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections scheduled for 7th December, 2020.

The final list of Presidential Candidates was released on the 12th of October, 2020 for Election 2020.
