The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has extended support to a brilliant but needy Physically Challenged person to further his studies at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

Iddrisu Abdul-Hanan, the student, who has a hearing-impaired condition but managed to gain admission to the university was hit by financial constraint and nearly dropped out of school.

The situation touched the heart of TUTAG, compelling the organization to absorb the entire academic fees of GH¢5,000 to help cover Abdul-Hanan’s fees for the three years. The move, according to TUTAG is also aimed at encouraging Persons With Disability (PWDs) to strive for success despite their challenges.

At a ceremony held in Tamale at the premises of the Tamale Technical University (TaTU), TUTAG President Master Abdul-Hanan said: “looking at the fees for the first year and by simple calculations based on projected marginal increases in the fees for the three-year period, we are presenting the cash for the fees to cover the entire three years stay on campus.”

He said, TUTAG was touched by the story after hearing him making an appeal through the media for assistance, hence decided to step in. “TUTAG, as a teacher union, is not only concerned about its own welfare but also that of its students and the vulnerable in society,” he said.

Mr. Abdul-Hanan added that the extension of support to the brilliant but needy young ones in society irrespective of the area could help curb the canker of streetism as well poverty rates in the country.

He further called on other well-meaning Ghanaians and cooperate organizations to extend support to the vulnerable persons in the society saying “if COVID-19 is so hard on us the able-bodied, then we can imagine what the PWDs and the vulnerable are going through.”

According to him, the effect of the pandemic is so severe that one can hardly fail to realize it in the daily lives of those who are already socio-economically vulnerable.

He stressed that failure to assist the vulnerable in society to harness their potentials and work on it to attain a higher status to enable them contribute to the socio-economic needs of the country and their family could compel them to be on the street.

Mr. Abdul-Hanan, receiving the cash, expressed gratitude to TUTAG for the support saying it would help him achieve his future dreams.

According to him, there are similar persons in the society in dire need of support to further their education or engage in other entrepreneurial programmes that can help bring some relief to them. “The continues support to the PWDs in society can help take most of them from the street and also prevent them from begging to make earns meet,” he added.
