MTN Ghana has engaged the Paramount Chief of Wassa Akropong Tradional Area, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, and his elders on their activities and programmes.

The subject of discussion focused on network situation, MTN mobile money and fraud activities associated with them, support to government during COVID-19, and understanding MTN products and services among others.

Kennedy Ofosuhene, Corporate Services Advisor for Southern Ghana who spoke for the Regional Senior Manager, thanked the chiefs and all stakeholders for their immense support to the MTN brand over the years.

Mr. Ofosuhene mentioned that MTN will continue to support government and communities in fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic. “A lot of initiatives have been implemented to support staff, customers and government. These includes a MoMo special offer, free browsing on over 200 educational websites, support to COVID Fund and donation of PPEs to over 50 hospitals and SHS,” he said.

According to him, MTN has donated US$25million to support the African Union’s (AU’s) COVID-19 vaccination programme.

Andy Coffie, Territory Sales Controller for Western North of MTN, noted that the MTN Network Group has optimised the network to enhance customer experience.

He explained that the major cause of network instability in the Wassa Akropong enclave is because of the activities of illegal mining operators who usually cut fibre in their quest for gold. He pleaded with the chiefs to help educate these illegal miners to help safeguard the infrastructure.

He mentioned some of the scenarios used by fraudsters – especially on MTN MoMo – as fraudsters call victims and pose as MTN officials to assist with customer’s pin reset, reverse a wrong transfer made to them, call and play recordings that mimic’s MTN’s call centre response to customers’ request.

He added that MTN will soon be launching its 25th anniversary celebrations and customers must always verify any claims before they respond. Mr. Coffie urged customers to be cautious of money-doubling schemes on radio and TV.

Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, Paramount chief of the Wassa Akropong Traditional Council, was grateful for the information and encouraged MTN to extend network coverage throughout his territory, as this will accelerate development.
