Hot Sports on DStv

Viewers on DStv can look forward to exclusive coverage of the world’s most iconic cycling event, the Tour de France, which will take place from 26 June to 18 July 2021.

The Grand Départ (start of the race), on Saturday 26 June in Brest, will set the tone for 21 mouth-watering stages, as the race takes in Brittany, two individual time trials, a double assault on Mont Ventoux and the customary finish on the Champs Élysées in Paris on July 18 – some 3,417 kilometres later! The 108th edition of the TDF will see defending champion Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) aim to defend his crown against Primoz Roglič (Jumbo-Visma), Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) and a host of other yellow jersey contenders.

Viewers on DStv can look forward to exclusive coverage of the third tennis Grand Slam of 2021, the Wimbledon Championships, live from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London from 28 June to 11 July.

The 2021 Wimbledon Championships will be the 134 edition of the tournament and sees it return to the tennis calendar after being cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The last Wimbledon in 2019 saw Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep win the Men’s and Women’s Singles titles respectively, while Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah won the Men’s Doubles, Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strycova won the Women’s Doubles, and the team of Ivan Dodig and Latisha Chan won the Mixed Doubles.

Djokovic, who earlier this month claimed the 2021 French Open title in dramatic style, comes to Wimbledon as the favourite to defend his crown and keep up the chance of winning an unprecedented ‘Golden Slam’ (claiming all four Grand Slam titles – Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open – within the same calendar year).

One of Djokovic’s main rivals, Rafael Nadal, will not be present at Wimbledon, after pulling out of both this tournament and the upcoming Olympic Games in order to nurse injuries and prolong his career, but the legendary Roger Federer will be chasing his ninth Wimbledon title.

“Straight away, head up, look forward, don’t take any silly decisions right now. Just stay positive and then we take it on to the next goal which is clearly Wimbledon,” said Federer.

On the Women’s Singles side, defending champion Simona Halep recently pulled out of a tournament in Hamburg due to a niggling calf problem, putting her in doubt for Wimbledon this year, while young star Naomi Osaka has already confirmed that she will not be present at SW19 as she continues to step away from the sport to take care of her mental health.

Surprise French Open champion Barbora Krejčíkova will be one to watch, while Belinda Bencic’s hard-hitting game could take her a long way on the grass courts and she has shown great form at this past weekend’s Grass Court Championships in Berlin.

Australia’s Ashleigh Barty, who was forced to withdraw from the French Open with a hip injury, is hoping to recover in time, while Serena Williams is always a threat at Wimbledon as she continues her quest for an elusive 24th Grand Slam singles title.

Viewers on DStv can look forward to thrills and spills from the world’s best basketball league, with ESPN 2 the premier venue for coverage of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The 2020-21 season will continue through the week of  Friday 25 June to Thursday 1 July 2021.

All the focus has now centred on the Conference Finals, with the East seeing the Atlanta Hawks taking on the Milwaukee Bucks after both claimed thrilling 4-3 Semifinal series triumphs over the  Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets respectively.

Over in the West, the LA Clippers have made history by advancing into the Conference Finals for the first time in their 51-year history, having overcome the Utah Jazz – a team which was so impressive in the Regular Season.

Yet the Clippers will come face-to-face with an ominous looking Phoenix Suns. The Arizona side eliminated the defending champions LA Lakers in the First Round, and then absolutely destroyed the Denver Nuggets 4-0 in the Semis.

Phoenix have also taken a 1-0 lead in the Western Confederation Finals series after a 120-114 triumph on Monday morning. Viewers on DStv will be able to see Games 3, 4 and 5 live on ESPN2 on the mornings of Friday 25 June, Tuesday 29 June and Thursday 1 July respectively.
