The sixth induction of members into the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG) has been held at the Alisa Hotel, Accra last Saturday. It was held under the theme ‘Insurance for Ghana’s Prosperity: Redefining Standards and Building confidence’.
It was held in collaboration with the Ghana Insurance College (GIC) and other corporate members in good standing. Under the auspices of the Council of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana, 103 members were presented for induction – made up of 15 persons who have satisfied requirements to be admitted as Fellows and will subsequently use the designatory title Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (FCIIG); and 88 Associate members who will subsequently use the designatory title Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (ACIIG).
Addressing the audience, Yvonne Osei Addo, Vice President – CIIG, who stood in for the President, Mr. Solomon Lartey, stated that the Ghana insurance industry currently has 1,006 individual members in good standing. According to her, 121 of this number are Fellows, 597 Associates, 78 Affiliates, 84 Diploma members, 123 students and 3 Certificate members.
She also indicated that there are 67 corporate members made up of 4 reinsurers, 33 insurers and 30 insurance and reinsurance broker firms. “These individuals and companies are in good standings and have all been registered with the Office of Registrar of Companies under Section 4 of the Professional Bodies Registration Acts 1973 Act 143.”
Yvonne disclosed that the institute is increasing its effort in obtaining the Government of Ghana Charter this year, so every practitioner of insurance – both corporate and individual – must make it a point to hold the CIIG membership irrespective of the category.
She reitrated Section 17, subsection 3 of the Professional Bodies Registration Act, 1973: “A person shall not practice a profession in respect of which a professional body has been registered under this Act unless that person has been duly registered under this section”.
She added subsection 4, which says: “When a person applies to a professional body for a certificate of good standing for the purposes of this section, the application shall be dealt with by that body as soon as possible and the decision of the registered professional body shall be communicated in writing to the applicant within seven days after the decision is taken.”
Furthermore, she stated the thought of subsection 5: “A person aggrieved by the refusal of a registered professional body to issue a certificate of good standing may within twenty-one days after the decision was communicated under subsection (4) appeal against the decision to the Court of Appeal”.
