The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s Ashanti Regional Office has facilitated a refund of GH₵2,700 to a complainant following Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) failure to comply with the terms of its Premium Service Category in the Ashanti Region.

This feat was achieved through PURC’s 2025 Agenda, ‘Responsible Regulation for Strategic Positioning’.

The complainant applied for ECG’s Premium Service Category and was supposed to be connected within 24 hours per terms of the service; however, he had to wait for days until he reported the matter to the Commission for intervention.

When the Commission called the matter for settlement on Friday, June 13, 2025, ECG officially apologised to the complainant and agreed to refund GH₵ 2,700 due to the breach of contract.

Subsequently, ECG issued the complainant a cash refund of GH₵ 2,700 accompanied by an unqualified apology. The complainant has since been connected to the national grid.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) ‘Responsible Regulations for Strategic Positioning’ for 2025 aims to ensure the real value of electricity and water while balancing the interests of service providers and consumers.

This includes conducting a multi-year major tariff review, monitoring utility operations for value for money and quality of service and addressing complaints and concerns.

Additionally, PURC is committed to ensuring reliability of electricity supply and protecting consumer interests.
