Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL) has handed over a two-unit staff accommodation facility valued at GH¢600,000 to Nsuaem Government Hospital in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem municipality of Western Region.

The facility aims to alleviate longstanding housing challenges faced by healthcare workers in the area.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, Corporate Affairs Manager-GREL Mr. Perry Acheampong said the project, although not originally budgeted for, became necessary due to the situation’s urgency.

“At GREL, we see the community as an integral part of our operations. Giving back is not just a corporate responsibility; it’s part of our core mandate,” he stated.

Mr. Acheampong added that the company employs many people within the municipality and traditional council and providing decent housing for health staff is part of its broader commitment to community support.

He urged hospital authorities and residents to ensure proper maintenance of the facility to prolong its use.

Dr. Beatrice Sam Omidiji, Medical Superintendent-Nsuaem Government Hospital, expressed gratitude while describing the support as timely and impactful.

GREL, she said, supported the facility with doctors’ flats few years ago and now this new one.

“Getting accommodation was a major difficulty, so we reached out to GREL and they responded. Staff are moving in immediately after the handing-over – that’s how urgent the need was,” she said.

Dr. Omidiji further appealed for additional support, particularly for nursing staff, highlighting the strain on resources due to an increasing number of nurses and patients.

“Our hospital is the only upgraded health facility serving this large catchment area. Providing additional flats would greatly improve the nurse-to-patient ratio,” she noted.

Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX, Chairman of the Association of Chiefs on Whose Land GREL Operates (ACLANGO), praised GREL for its continued support across over 90 communities in its operational area.
