MPs back private sanitation firms

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources has pledged to support private sanitation companies, including Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a Jospong Group subsidiary, in their efforts to make Ghana counted among the best and cleanest countries.

During a visit to Zoomlion’s Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant (KCARP) on April 24, 2025, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. John Oti Bless, emphasised the importance of supporting Ghanaian companies to thrive and contribute to the country’s development.

Ready to support private sanitation companies

“We as a committee are ready to support Ghanaian companies, especially those in the sanitation sector, to create jobs and improve the lot of Ghanaians,” he assured.

In this regard, he commended Zoomlion and Jospong Group of Companies for their substantial investment in sanitation management.

“In fact, I am impressed! This is the first time I’m witnessing this kind of investment. Zoomlion and Jospong are Ghanaians, and I commend them for the wisdom and knowledge given to him [making reference to Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, the Executive Chairman of JGC] by God.

I urge the public, service providers, farmers, civil society organisations, and everyone to support Jospong Group, especially the government. A private company’s growth and success largely depend on government support,” the Chairman indicated.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to settling the GHC 1.2 billion debt owed to Zoomlion, as previously promised by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

He said discussions were already underway with the Chief Executive Officer of Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, and who will also be invited before the committee to see how best to improve remunerations for sweepers.

Mr. Oti Bless rejected calls by investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, to not renew Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s contract under the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP).

Disagreeing with Manasseh, he emphasised that issues with the contract should be addressed rather than terminated, warning that termination would lead to thousands of job losses, particularly in rural communities.

“If there are issues with the contract that’s why we are leaders, we have to address them,” he said.

He announced plans to invite Manasseh Azure Awuni to appear before the committee to share concerns and find a way forward.

“We want to invite Manasseh Azure to appear before the committee sometime next week… to come and share the information he has as far as this issue is concerned, so we find a way out,” he said.

Supporting Zoomlion and Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) would help grow the businesses and create more jobs for Ghanaians, he added.

Zoomlion’s General Manager of KCARP, Samuel Ntummy, thanked the committee for visiting to inspect their facilities and requested their support for private waste management companies like Zoomlion to enhance sanitation in Ghana.
