Bibiani Gold Stars secured a significant 1-0 win over Young Apostles FC at home on Sunday, moving them to joint-top with Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the summit of the Premier League (GPL) table, as the latter dropped points.
The Miners extend their unbeaten home run, which sends them level on 47 points with Asante Kotoko, who have a superior goal difference. It took a brilliant display of skills for Alex Esso to score the decisive goal on the stroke of the first half to separate the two teams at the Duns Park.
Asante Kotoko dropped points at home in a 1-1 draw with Bechem United, allowing Gold Stars – who has maintained a close gap for the past few weeks – to now have a better opportunity at the trophy as the season draws closer to an end.
The Porcupine Warriors, after sharing the spoils in an entertaining fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table.
The late afternoon kick-off on Sunday saw Darlvin Yeboah put the visitors in front in the 59th minute; but with their title ambitions at stake, Kotoko pushed forward in search of an equaliser and were handed a lifeline when they were awarded a controversial penalty in the closing stages. Albert Amoah stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to restore parity in the 80th minute.
Elsewhere, Accra Hearts of Oak’s woes continued in this match week 27 as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Vision FC.
The Phobian’s GPL title hope now looks impossible as they sit fifth on the table with 41 points, six points behind leaders arch rival Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars.
The Phobians scored first through Kelvin Osei Asibey in the 38th minute before Meshack Sowah Adjetey pulled parity two minutes into the second half.
Despite dominating early on, Vision FC was stunned when Kelvin Osei Asibey capitalised on a goalkeeping error to score first at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex in Tema New Town.
The home side levelled matters just two minutes into the second half with a superb strike to beat goalkeeper Benjamin Asare in the 47th minute.
Hearts are behind Medeama in fifth position with 40 points while Vision FC find themselves in 14th position with 29 points.
Karela United eased to a comfortable 2-0 win over Aduana FC to continue their fight against relegation. Adamu Alhassan scored a brace to hand United their 7th win of the season at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.
Elsewhere, Berekum Chelsea strolled to a narrow 1-0 win over Heart of Lions, with Zackaria Fuseini scoring the match-winner at the Golden City Park on Sunday.
Fuseini scored in the 17th minute to delight the fans as Chelsea extended their Premier League win to nine. Chelsea lies in 10th while Lions drop to eight in the table.
Legon Cities continued their slide toward the relegation zone as FC Samartex 1996 secured a comfortable 0-2 victory against the Accra side on Sunday.
Having gone into the game hoping to improve from their 0-0 stalemate against Young Apostles, Cities were unable to impose themselves as they fell to defeat. Emmanuel Mamah found the breakthrough in the 21st minute before Baba Musa Hamadu sealed victory with the second goal in the 58th minute.
