Nurses and trainee teachers monthly allowances are to be paid through the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, President John Dramani Mahama has announced.

The aim of this new directive is to eliminate delays and other bureaucratic procedures that usually impede the disbursement of funds timeously.

“This will permanently eliminate the delay in trainees receiving their allowances; and this has been made a part of the compensations item in the budget. This means that any time public sector workers receive their monthly salary, teachers and nursing trainees will also receive their allowances,” he said.

This, he added, would facilitate their academic work as it will ensure sound mind to focus on studies on the respective campuses and also encouraged more youths to pursue career in teaching and nursing.

President Mahama announced this in Tamale when he toured the Northern Region to express gratitude to the citizens for the massive trust and vote for the National Democratic Congress into power.

According to him, the educational sector is key to the growth of the country; hence, his government is committed to ensuring the welfare of teachers.

“Your own, Haruna Iddrisu – Member of Parliament for Tamale South, is the Minister of Education and is leading the charge to reform our educational sector. As your President, I embrace that trust with deep gratitude while recognising my responsibility not just to say democracy is worth it but to prove that democracy can work,” he said.

The president assured that he will show through action that democratic system can deliver on the promises of decent economic life and just society for every citizen.

“My brothers and sisters, we can do it not as one party or a single government; but we can do it together as one nation,” he stressed.

“From the bustling streets of Accra to the quiet farmlands of the north, from the shores of the coast to the marketplaces of Tamale, we will rebuild our economy not with mere words but with bold action. We will rebuild our nation with honest leadership and a relentless commitment to progress. We will lift each other, knowing that when we stand together, there’s no obstacle too great, no challenge too daunting and no dream too high and beyond our reach,” he pledged.

Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, expressed gratitude to the President for the commitment to bring development to the region by helping to address perennial issues and also completing abandoned projects.

“Your decision to embark on this nationwide tour to thank the people for the mandate given to you to lead this country is both humbling and inspiring. It reflects your deep respect for the people and your commitment to inclusive governance,” he said.
