South Africa’s Global Moment: How strategic partnerships are shaping our future and global competitiveness

0

In today’s fast-evolving global economy, South Africa stands at a critical inflection point — one marked by immense potential and a profound responsibility. As we prepare to host the landmark G20 Summit, we draw on a rich legacy of successfully staging global events and serving as the commercial and political gateway to the African continent.

The recent 7th Nation Brand Forum, hosted by Brand South Africa, brought together government leaders, industry pioneers, civil society representatives, and grassroots innovators to collaboratively shape South Africa’s Nation Brand. Under the banner “Forging Partnerships to Advance Global Competitiveness (Unity for Growth, Leading with Purpose),”the Forum underscored the critical role of inclusive public–private partnerships in transforming economic challenges into opportunities and advancing sustainable growth.

It reaffirmed South Africa’s leadership role, grounded in three strategic pillars: strategic and purposeful partnerships, digital transformation, and the power of nation branding as a catalyst for long-term economic prosperity.

  1. Partnerships with Purpose: Catalysing Resilience and Growth

South Africa’s story has always been one of collaboration. From major infrastructure projects to the empowerment of small enterprises, public–private partnerships (PPPs) have consistently driven national progress. But these are not just transactional collaborations — they are transformative mechanisms aligning public sector priorities with private sector innovation and efficiency.

Take the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), which is helping resolve South Africa’s energy challenges while attracting significant private investment and advancing our sustainability goals.

Since 1994, private sector investment has grown from 4.9% to 6.4% of GDP, a testament to growing confidence in South Africa’s economic environment. This collaborative model enables inclusive development and resilience — crucial qualities in today’s uncertain global context.

As Ipeleng Selele, Chairperson of Brand South Africa, noted during the Forum:
“Public–private partnerships are fundamental to driving long-term growth and enhancing our global competitiveness. Our ability to create an environment where business and government collaborate effectively is key to building an inclusive and resilient economy.”

In fact, entrepreneurs like Zanele Nkosi, a Johannesburg-based renewable energy supplier, are already benefitting. “Our partnership with the REIPPPP has allowed us to scale beyond what we imagined. It’s not just about power generation — it’s about powering people and possibilities,” she shared at the Forum.

  1. The Digital Nation: A Growth Engine and Storyteller

Globally, nations that prioritise digital transformation are reshaping their economies — India’s rise as a fintech hub is a prime example. South Africa is poised to follow suit, emerging as a continental leader in digital innovation.

With over 45 million active internet users and projections that the digital economy could account for 20% of GDP by 2025, we are laying the groundwork for an inclusive, tech-enabled economy. More importantly, digital tools are amplifying South Africa’s voice on the global stage — empowering creatives, entrepreneurs, and young people to tell uniquely South African stories.

To fully realise this potential, we must invest in digital skills development, close the digital divide, and ensure technology serves as a bridge to prosperity.

  1. From G20 to AfCFTA: A Platform for Influence

South Africa’s G20 Presidency is more than a ceremonial milestone — it is a pivotal opportunity to project Africa’s collective voice on global matters such as sustainable development, emerging market resilience, and equitable trade.

As Neville Matjie, CEO of Brand South Africa, emphasised:
“Our place within the G20 underscores the importance of a unified and compelling nation brand, one that demonstrates to the world that South Africa is not just open for business but is leading Africa’s participation in key global conversations.”

Our role within AfCFTA and SADC enhances this positioning, enabling us to act as both a bridge and a leader within Africa’s growing economic bloc. South Africa stands ready to unlock deeper regional and international partnerships, helping to chart the course for the continent’s integration into the global economy.

  1. Johannesburg: Africa’s Event Capital

Johannesburg is more than a commercial hub — it is a symbol of South Africa’s capacity to host the world. From the 2010 FIFA World Cup to the recent 15th BRICS Summit, Johannesburg has delivered world-class events with precision and flair.

Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Dada Morero captured this sentiment:
“We are ready to host the G20 Summit. Johannesburg is the gateway to Africa and the rest of the world. No other nation can make that claim.”

With world-class infrastructure like the Gautrain, BRT systems, and the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg exemplifies the logistical and hospitality strengths that make South Africa a sought-after destination for international convenings.

  1. The Gateway to Opportunity

At the southern tip of Africa, South Africa’s geographic and strategic position makes it a vital conduit for investment, trade, and diplomacy. Our “gateway” status is not just about location — it’s about leadership, influence, and a history of unlocking new opportunities for global partners.

As we prepare for the G20 Summit, we are called to reimagine and reaffirm this role, positioning South Africa as both a trusted partner and a bold leader at the intersection of the Global South and the world’s major economies.

The Road Ahead: A Collective Call

South Africa’s G20 moment is not just about a summit — it is a once-in-a-generation chance to shape global narratives and ignite sustainable progress for ourselves and for Africa. By building on partnerships, embracing digital transformation, and elevating our nation brand, we can create a lasting legacy of innovation, inclusivity, and shared prosperity.

Now is the time to step forward with purpose, unlocking the future we envision for generations to come.
