Golden Star Wassa Limited has reaffirmed its commitment to community development by handing over US$1.6 million infrastructure projects to nine communities within its operational zone.
These projects, which include water systems, school blocks, teachers’ quarters, and a community center, aim to improve the quality of life for residents of Akyempim, Brofuyedru, Akosombo, Kubekro, Odumasi, Accra Town, Old Subri, Juaben and Enyinabreim.
The projects were financed through the Golden Star Development Fund, which pools resources from various sources. Funding streams include 0.1% of Golden Star Wassa’s pretax profit, proceeds from the Golden Star Development Foundation, a levy of US$1 per ounce of gold produced by the company, and contributions from third-party contractors as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) obligations.
The projects include eight Unit Teachers’ Quarters, a Model School Block, six Unit Teachers Quarters, and Community Centres amongst a host of other infrastructural projects.
At the official handing over ceremony, the Vice President and Managing Director of Golden Star Wassa Limited, Shadrach Adjetey Sowah, underscored the company’s dedication to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.
“These projects reflect our commitment to fostering lasting benefits for the communities in which we operate. By investing in education, water supply, and essential infrastructure, we are supporting long-term growth and well-being,” he stated.
Mr. Adjetey Sowah further noted that “the projects are a reflection of our commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. SDG 4, talks about Quality Education for all and SDG 6 talks about Water and Sanitation. These are the critical areas we have provided infrastructure for these communities.”
The Paramount Queen Mother of Wassa Fiase, Nana Abena Konadjoa II expressed her appreciation for the timely intervention, highlighting the positive impact of the projects on education, sanitation, and overall community welfare. “This support is invaluable, the school blocks and teachers’ quarters will significantly enhance education in our area, while the water systems will alleviate our water supply challenges,” she noted.
Golden Star Wassa assured stakeholders of its continuous investment in community development initiatives, pledging to explore more opportunities for collaboration to uplift the socio-economic conditions of its host communities.
