MTN Ghana has hosted students from the St. Nicholas Charity Foundation School at its head office in Accra, offering them an opportunity to tour the facility as well as gain insights about the industry.
The initiative aimed to inspire and educate students on various career prospects while providing insight into MTN’s operations.
The visit was organised following an initial engagement between a group of professionals called Padis, of which some members are staff at MTN Ghana.
Frank Kofi Ayivor, representing Padis Group – a network of professionals engaged in community service, explained the group’s role in supporting St. Nicholas Charity Foundation School, saying: “As part of our outreach programmes, we identified St. Nicholas as a school in need of support. Last year, we provided learning materials, food supplies and other essentials.
“Beyond donations, we wanted to create long-term impact by offering career exposure. With members working in different sectors, including MTN, we facilitated this visit to help the students understand career options available to them,” he said.
Internal Communications Advisor at MTN Ghana, Olivia Mifetu, highlighted the rationale behind the tour; noting that exposing students to corporate settings helps shape their aspirations.
“We received a request from St. Nicholas Foundation School to visit MTN. When I learned about their background, I saw it as a great opportunity to support them. I gave them a presentation on the history of MTN, its operations across different countries and the MTN Foundation’s work,” she said.
She further emphasised the importance of such visits for inspiring students to pursue careers in ICT, sustainability and other fields.
“This exposure helps students see real career possibilities, giving them confidence to identify and pursue their passions. It also enhances MTN’s image as a company committed to empowering the youth,” she added.
Manager for Sustainability-MTN Ghana, Entsua Rhoderlyn Mensah, also engaged students on the company’s sustainability initiatives and how they can contribute to creating a better environment.
Other senior managers from MTN’s team educated the students on career paths within the telecom industry and how to leverage digital resources for academic and professional growth.
Assistant Headmaster of St. Nicholas Charity Foundation School, Gbeve Kelly Bright, emphasised the significance of the visit, stating that it would serve as a motivational tool for the students.
“We wanted to bring them here to experience what happens in the corporate world and learn about the various professions at MTN. This will encourage them to take their studies seriously and consider future careers in technology and telecommunications. The students have already started giving feedback on what they have learned, particularly in ICT-related areas,” he said.
He also highlighted the school’s mission, explaining that it provides free education, meals and health services to children from underprivileged backgrounds.
He called on individuals and organisations to support the school’s cause in sustaining its educational programmes.
