Veep honours Dr. Bernice Makafui Brempong at Women of Excellence Awards

Dr. Bernice Makafui Brempong, Senior Executive in charge of Investments in Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals at the office of the President has been honoured by the Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, at the 10th Ghana Women of Excellence Awards as she picks the prestigious prize.

The Awards ceremony, which was held on the 7th March 2025 to mark the International Women’s Day was presented to Dr. Makafui by the vice president, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, in recognition of her contribution to the development of the pharmaceutical industry in Ghana.

The Vice President congratulated her for the feat achieved and encouraged her to keep soaring in the healthcare sector, serving as a role model to other young females.



Driven by her passion for healthcare innovation and governance, Dr. Makafui is an advocate for policies that drive sustainable healthcare solutions. She has been committed to empowering women and young professionals in science, healthcare and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Makafui’s remarkable contributions have been recognised through multiple Awards, including: Africa Outstanding Professional Award (2022); Most Outstanding Female in Pharmaceuticals in Ghana Award (2022) and 50 Most Influential Women in Ghana Award (2023).

Beyond her corporate and advisory roles, Makafui has been actively involved in public health research, spearheading studies on: Vaccine manufacturing feasibility; Medication shortages; and cardiovascular disease care.

Before her appointment at the office of the President, Dr. Makafui was the Chief Executive Officer of Makhealth Pharmaceuticals Limited, a position she seamlessly moved into after gaining considerable experience working with some of Ghana’s leading pharmaceutical companies, including Ernest Chemists Limited and Entrance Pharmaceuticals Limited.

She holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology as well as a Master of Science degree in Entrepreneurship from University College London (UCL), obtained concurrently in 2022. She graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the School of Pharmacy, University of Ghana, Legon in 2016.

Her academic background, combined with her practical experience, has enabled her to smoothly blend her healthcare expertise and business acumen to drive innovation in healthcare solutions.

The Ghana Women of Excellence Awards is organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to mark the celebration of International Women’s Day in Ghana.

The 2025-year edition was organized under the theme: “Empowering the Ghanaian Woman for National Development”.
