The Vice-Chancellor of Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of techpreneurs—graduates who combine technological expertise with entrepreneurial drive.

Speaking at the University’s 34th Matriculation Ceremony held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, he emphasised GCTU’s mission to equip students not only with ICT skills but also the innovative mindset needed to create transformative solutions and business opportunities through technology.

The term “techpreneur” is a fusion of “technology” and “entrepreneur,” representing individuals who are deeply passionate about technology and its potential to solve problems, improve processes, and create new business opportunities.

More importantly, he emphasised that beyond being sought after for their expertise, GCTU graduates will also possess the entrepreneurial skills to establish their own businesses, effectively becoming ‘techpreneurs.’

“Our students are not just passive learners but active contributors to the field of ICT. Over the next four years, you will not only gain knowledge but also develop the skills needed to innovate, create, and drive digital transformation,” Prof. Afoakwa stated.

“You will be empowered to start your own businesses and become techpreneurs, shaping the digital economy in Ghana and beyond,” he added.

 Innovation and Entrepreneurship

To ensure that students receive the best possible training, Prof. Afoakwa assured that GCTU would deliver an unparalleled educational experience.

He highlighted the state-of-the-art laboratories, cutting-edge technology, and industry partnerships that will provide students with real-world experience and hands-on learning opportunities.

“We are committed to fostering scholarship through transformative student experiences, problem-based learning, and experiential learning approaches, all enabled through ICT-driven, cutting-edge technology,” he affirmed.

Prof. Afoakwa further emphasised GCTU’s focus on preparing students for the opportunities and challenges presented by today’s complex and interconnected world.

He noted that the university would continue to equip graduates with the skills and expertise needed to thrive in the competitive global landscape.

“As Vice-Chancellor, my vision is clear: to transform GCTU into the institution of first choice for the development of human resource capacity in West Africa for the 5th Industrial Revolution (5IR),” he stated.
