President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his unwavering support for women entrepreneurs, pledging to foster their growth and create a conducive regulatory environment for green technology to flourish.
His commitment came during a meeting with Valerie Labi, co-founder of Wahu Mobility, and Abena Baidoo, the company’s Chief Financial Officer at the Flagstaff House earlier this week.
The discussion focused on the role of women-led businesses in shaping the country’s economy, particularly in the fast-growing electric mobility sector.
Wahu Mobility is a pioneering company manufacturing electric bicycles and preparing to introduce electric Okadas to the market. With a vision for sustainable transportation, the company has already created over 500 jobs in the past year, providing employment for engineers, delivery riders, and other skilled workers.
Mahama acknowledged the impact of women entrepreneurs in driving innovation and job creation. He assured them that his administration is dedicated to providing the necessary support to help their businesses thrive. This includes policies that will make it easier for women-led green technology startups to access funding, navigate regulations, and expand their operations.
Labi shared her plan to set up a 24-hour green electric vehicle zone in Accra, which she believes will create over 200,000 jobs in the next five years. The President welcomed the idea, saying it aligns with his government’s plans to grow the economy in a sustainable way.
He also mentioned other steps his government is taking to support women and green businesses. These include setting up a Women’s Development Bank to provide financial support, improving road infrastructure through the Big Push program, and promoting electric two-wheelers to reduce carbon emissions.
The President’s engagement with Wahu Mobility reflects his leadership’s commitment to building a greener, more inclusive economy. By supporting women entrepreneurs in key sectors like electric mobility, the country is not only advancing gender equality but also securing a more sustainable future.
As the country joins the world in celebrating International Women’s Day under the theme “Accelerate Action,” President Mahama’s meeting with Labi and Baidoo sends a strong message. Empowering women entrepreneurs is not just about fairness- it is a strategic move for national development.
