Sherif Ghali, a youth activist and CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Young Entrepreneurs, has expressed disappointment over the exclusion of the Youth Ministry from the newly formed Cabinet by the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) government.

In a statement, Mr. Ghali said the decision is a setback for youth development in the country, stressing that- young people play a key role in the nation’s progress, innovation, and economy.

Additionally, he said that youth-centered campaigns contributed significantly to the NDC’s recent election victory, making it necessary for the government to prioritise youth issues.

“The absence of a dedicated Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment in the Cabinet is a major concern. It could affect the coordination of youth programs, reduce funding opportunities, and slow down Ghana’s long-term economic growth.

“The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment is expected to serve as the technical focal point for addressing the challenges faced by the youth and ensuring that policies designed to nurture them are robust and effectively executed. Therefore, it must be part of the cabinet,” he added.

He is therefore calling on President John Mahama and his government to reconsider the Cabinet’s composition and include a youth ministry to provide strong leadership for young people.

“The energy, creativity, and potential of our youth are crucial for national development. The government must recognise this and ensure the right structures are in place to support them,” he added.

Many youth development advocates share similar concerns, stressing the need for clear policies and leadership to empower young people in the country.
