The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, alongside members of the project committee has inspected ongoing refurbishment works at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) under the Heal Komfo Anokye project.
According to Chairman of the project Samuel Adu Boakye, Phase 1 – covering two floors of Block A – is approximately 95% complete. He noted that the final component, the oxygen bed-head units, will be installed by end of the week.
The Heal Komfo Anokye project was launched in November 2023 after the Asantehene expressed dissatisfaction with the over 70-year-old hospital’s deteriorating state . The initiative seeks to raise funds from private individuals and corporate organisations, both within and beyond the Ashanti Region, to restore the facility.
Speaking on behalf of the Asantehene, Nana Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene II expressed satisfaction with the work completed so far.
“We have successfully renovated two floors, transforming them into state-of-the-art spaces that now resemble a newly-built facility. The Asantehene is highly impressed and appreciative of the project committee’s efforts, particularly in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades. The improvements at KATH are truly remarkable,” he stated.
He further appealed for continued public support to accelerate completion of the next phases, ensuring enhanced healthcare delivery.
“We urge everyone, especially residents of the region, to contribute toward meeting our target and completing the project. Each block has four floors – and with two already completed, we are proceeding in phases to minimise disruptions for patients.
To speed up progress, we are covering import duties on essential equipment rather than waiting for free clearance as delays would slow the project. We remain hopeful that government will step in to support this crucial initiative,” he added.
Project chair calls for more support
Speaking to journalists after the inspection, Project Committee Chair Samuel Adu Boakye expressed satisfaction with the progress and assured the public that work will continue at an accelerated pace, as all necessary resources are now available.
“We are optimistic that this phase will be completed swiftly because all essential materials are in place. It is remarkable that within just six months we have raised nearly US$4 million, thanks to generous donations from individuals, corporate entities, associations, fun clubs and philanthropists like Joshob, one of our major contributors. This level of support is commendable.”
However, he emphasised that more funds are needed to complete the remaining phases and urged sceptics to trust in the project’s transparency.
“For those who were uncertain about how funds would be used, you can now see the high-quality work being done. We encourage everyone to continue supporting this noble cause,” he said.
Managing Director-Joshob Construction James Osei Brown also praised the quality of work.
“The work done so far is truly impressive. This will motivate us to contribute even more so that the project is completed soon.”
