As he steps down, Tourism bids Akwasi Agyeman a hearty farewell

Practitioners of the tourism industry have extended heartfelt appreciation and warm wishes to outgoing CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mr. Akwasi Agyeman, on a social media platform, following his resignation from the authority with the onset of the new administration.

Mr. Agyeman, who steps down after eight years at the helm of affairs at the national agency for marketing and government policy implementation of tourism, will be remembered for leaving a legacy of great strides toward the growth of the industry.

With a strong marketing and management background, Mr. Agyeman steered the organisation through a period of remarkable recovery and growth in Ghana’s tourism sector, overseeing significant achievements, including implementing such innovative campaigns as ‘The Year of Return’, “Beyond the Return’ and ‘December in Ghana’ which, in particular, have helped in positioning Ghana as a major Christmas holiday destination.

Tactical marketing initiatives like ‘See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana, Feel Ghana’ have also significantly boosted both international and domestic tourism, with his guardianship navigating the post-pandemic recovery of the sector and with international arrivals rebounding from 355,108 in 2020 to 1,148,002 in 2023 – surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Domestic tourism also began to flourish, with visitor numbers increasing from 456,000 in 2017 to 1.4 million in 2023.

In his time, GTA completed numerous infrastructure projects, including the rehabilitation of Kintampo Waterfalls, the Kwahu Paragliding Site, Bunso Eco Park, Denkyira Kyekyewere Eco Park, Tano Boase Sacred Grove, The Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm, and Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary. The redevelopment of the Accra Tourist Information Centre and historic sites such as the Nationalism Park, the Geese Park, Salaga Slave Market, Bonwire Kente Museum, and Pikworo Slavery Camp are also worthy of note.

Together with his team, Mr. Agyeman also spearheaded digital transformation within GTA, launching the National Tourism Destination Single Window Project and the ‘Visit Ghana’ App, streamlining operations and enhancing service delivery. His commitment to training and capacity building was evident through the Ghana CARES Obaatanpa Initiative, which trained over 3,069 individuals in customer service, digital marketing and tourism product knowledge.

Under his leadership, GTA forged significant international partnerships, strengthening Ghana’s position on the global tourism map. Collaborations with organisations such as Howard University, Warner Music and Essence have been instrumental in promoting Ghana as a key MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) destination in West Africa. These partnerships have also bolstered Ghana’s diaspora tourism initiatives, further enhancing the country’s appeal to global travellers.

Sharing a post of gratitude himself, Akwasi thanked everyone on the Ghana Tourism Forum platform for their “unwavering support and collaboration”.

Confident that “under the guidance of our incoming minister and her team, our industry will continue to thrive and reach new heights”, he encouraged all to “give them your maximum support as you gave me”.

“It has been an incredible journey,” he added, “and I am truly thankful for the relationships we have built and the progress we have made together in our industry.”

Here’s wishing Mr. Agyeman all the very best, for his camaraderie. We look forward to reconnecting in the very near future.
