… A New Era for Facility Management Education
In a landmark event aimed at bridging the gap between academia and industry, the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) Ghana Chapter has launched a Student Chapter at the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) in Wa.
The ceremony, which drew students, faculty, and industry leaders, was filled with enthusiasm, underscoring the potential of this collaboration to shape the future of Facility Management in Ghana.
Addressing the gathering, the President of IFMA Ghana, Mr. Sampson Opare-Agyemang, highlighted the pivotal role of Facility Management in modern society.
“Today, with the launch of this Student Chapter, we are one step closer to creating a thriving community of future professionals right here in Wa. Facility Management is a profession that plays a crucial role in optimizing the performance and functionality of buildings, spaces, and infrastructures. It’s about ensuring the smooth, efficient operation of the spaces where people live, work, and interact,” he said.
Mr. Opare-Agyemang further emphasized the increasing importance of the profession in addressing global challenges.
“From sustainability and safety to ensuring the well-being of all users, Facility Management is vital to the success of organizations and communities alike. The establishment of the IFMA Ghana Student Chapter at SDD-UBIDS offers a fantastic opportunity to bring this profession to the forefront of the university experience, providing students with the resources, knowledge, and network to develop their skills in Facility Management.”
Prof. Elvis Attakora Amaniapong , Patron of the newly launched Student Chapter, lauded the initiative for its potential to transform the professional journeys of students.
“This Student Chapter is more than an academic milestone—it’s a gateway to real-world opportunities. Facility Management is a dynamic profession that demands innovation, resilience, and a deep commitment to excellence. Through this platform, students will not only gain industry insights but also develop leadership skills that will set them apart,” he remarked.
The students at SDD-UBIDS were equally enthusiastic about this groundbreaking initiative. One student shared, “We are happy for this because we get to learn from professionals. This is the kind of exposure we’ve been waiting for.”
The launch event also featured interactive sessions, showcasing the latest trends in Facility Management and the profession’s role in addressing challenges like urbanization and environmental sustainability.
The IFMA Ghana Chapter has pledged ongoing support to the Student Chapter through mentorship programs, internships, and networking opportunities. With this launch, the foundation has been laid for a generation of professionals equipped to make a lasting impact on Ghana’s built environment and beyond.
