The Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) has called for swift reforms in the country’s mining sector to address illegal mining and environmental degradation, while committing to support efforts aimed at instilling environmental stewardship.

In a statement acknowledging President John Dramani Mahama’s successful inauguration for a second term as 6th President of the 4th Republic, the association reaffirmed its dedication to advancing responsible and sustainable mining practices.

“GNASSM is fully committed to collaborating with your administration to promote environmental stewardship, particularly the protection of water-bodies and forest reserves across the country,” the statement noted.

It added: “We acknowledge the critical role small-scale miners play in Ghana’s mining sector and remain steadfast in our mission to combat illegal mining (galamsey). In partnership with successive governments, GNASSM has played a pivotal role in tackling this challenge and has not relented on the situation confronting all of us”.

On the back of this, the statement signed by its General Secretary Godwin Amarh made some key recommendations.

GNASSM stressed the importance of enforcing mining laws to curb environmental degradation and water pollution, together with improved community sensitisation and capacity-building initiatives for small-scale miners and civil society organisations to promote responsible mining practices.

Also, it called for engineering solutions: such as the development of mining equipment, effective site-planning and the integration of mining engineers to optimise operations while minimising environmental harm.

They emphasised that strengthening the role of local communities, civil society organizations (CSOs), industry associations, and the media is key to addressing the menace of illegal mining.

Furthermore, GNASSM called for attitudinal change – that is, promoting a cultural shift toward environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.

Meanwhile, the association lauded President Mahama’s commitment to advancing the country’s development and pledged its full support to his administration in tackling challenges in the mining sector.

“Dealing with illegal mining and environmental degradation requires a collective effort,” the statement noted.

The association expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Mahama administration on implementing sustainable mining practices that protect natural resources and benefit future generations.

“On behalf of the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners, I assure you of our full support as you embark on your second term in office,” GNASSM stated.
