Electrochem Ghana Limited has issued a response to allegations made in a documentary titled ‘Death and Brutality – The Battle for West Africa’s Largest Salt Deposit’, published by The Fourth Estate on November 18, 2024.
The company, in a statement, described the claims as “deeply disturbing and contrary to the truth”, asserting that the documentary seeks to undermine its efforts in the Ada Traditional Area.
Concession area legitimacy
Electrochem clarified that its concession spans 41,000 acres across Ada East and Ada West Districts, a lease ratified by the Parliament of Ghana. The company dismissed claims of discrepancies in acreage, reiterating its operations are within the legally defined space and in compliance with Ghanaian law.
Fishermen’s access restored
Addressing concerns about fishermen losing access to the Songor Lagoon, Electrochem stated its restoration efforts that have revived the once-dry lagoon. This has created employment for over 400 fishermen, each earning an average daily income of GH¢100.
Community engagement and allegations of human rights abuses
The company denied allegations of unlawful arrests or abuses, stating that it upholds human rights as enshrined in Ghana’s Constitution.
It further noted its community engagement strategy, involving traditional authorities, landowners, regulatory bodies and affected communities.
Specific claims by individuals, including Madam Janet Narh and Madam Christiana Modzifa Anim, were also refuted. Electrochem labelled these as either baseless or factually inaccurate, providing counter-narratives supported by its records and grievance redress mechanisms.
On livelihood support and economic impact, the company reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sustainable livelihoods through initiatives such as the Community Pan Initiative and the Tributer Scheme, which allocate 2,000 acres for local salt production. These programmes are projected to generate 110,000 metric tonnes of salt annually, translating into GH¢137.5million in community revenue.
Financial contributions
The company also highlighted its financial accountability, reporting the payment of GH¢3.5million in mineral royalties and GH¢2.7million in ground rent between 2021 and 2024. These payments, it stated, reflect its dedication to national development and community support.
Further, it reiterated its mission to transform the Songor Lagoon into an economic hub while supporting inclusivity and sustainability. Electrochem said it remains open to constructive dialogue, emphasising its commitment to transparency and community development.
