The resort on the hill, you will go back for its balmy enchantment once you visit Hilburi up the mountains northward of Accra at Aburi in the Akwapim South Municipal District of the Eastern Region.
Aburi’s highland location and cooler clime has made it quite a popular resort destination. It is famous for a botanical garden whose initial focus was as a “culture experimentation farm” with indigenous crops such as cocoa, rubber and cola, along with a few ornamental and fruit plants that could extend the economic potential for the British colonial administration back in the late nineteenth century.
Today, however, Aburi is a major hub for tourism and boasts many beautiful places, including the boutique Hilburi Hotel.
Just some 40 minutes out of town, this is a place that is easy to fall in love with. Composed and sedate, Hilburi just resonates with its temperate earth coloured walls and incredibly beautiful views of the greenery of the nearby undulating hills.
The setting here itself – with its rock gardens the welcoming simplicity of its décor in natural wood, stone and wrought iron; the accent of deep blue amid the neutral earth hues; the cuisine and all – cause much pleasant memories after each visit.
Getting there. Head out north past Adenta and continue up on the dual carriage to the defunct toll booth at Ayi Mensah. Then drive up the hill – an exciting winding but pleasant climb till you get to Peduase, where the state ceremonial country home is located. Just after the fruit market town of Kitase, you will come to Hilburi along the main road on the right hand side. Look out for the signage.
The kitchen here is quite innovative with new recipes for casual dining all the time – from burgers to soups, and salads and bites. Today, I’m having this gorgeous piece of ‘steak’ and a spicy juicy slab, while my travel buddy had the new Hilburi grilled chicken which seems to be going down very well.
When up the hill in the Aburi area, do stop by – at least – for drinks and these great views so fluent in lushness!
The rooms here at this family-oriented property is simply exquisite. Minimalist décor with some ethnic African art that creates a very cosy atmosphere. A conference & events destination, it’s unique combination of tropical surroundings with landscaping and an infinity pool overlooking the valleys of the Akwapim mountain range provides a truly stunning picturesque view of the evergreen hills, with Accra at the distance.
At night, the sparkling lights of the distance sums it all up!
