The Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has inaugurated the Awoin Traditional Council, granting it full authority to operate under the leadership of Paramount Chief Beyeman Tano Kawa Benbiun III.
This development, marks a significant milestone for the Awoin Traditional area, which has experienced chieftaincy riots and several assassinations attempts on the Omanehene in the past.
Stephen Asamoah Boateng, the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in an address read
for him pointed out that the unveiling of the Traditional Council, is expected to bring peace and development in the area.
The Council, he said will now have the power to hear and determine matters affecting chieftaincy within the traditional area.
“There is the need for you as Chiefs, to understand the processes and procedures involved in resolving conflicts through the judicial and arbitration system and other alternative methods in resolving conflicts that may arise in your traditional area”, he said.
He also urged them to understand the process involved in allocating land, granting leases and land administration in general, and know some of the laws and Acts covering the Chieftaincy Institution.
“The Prime one is the Chieftaincy Act of 2008, Act 759. Others are, the Legislative Instrument (L.I) 798, the Constitution Instrument (C.I) 27, Chapter 22 of the Constitution and other enactments.
We are here to conduct this commissioning because Section 12 (1) of the Chieftaincy Act of 2008, Act 759 calls for the Institution of a Traditional Council within each Traditional Area. “There shall be a ‘Traditional’ Council in each Traditional area” Mr. Boateng added.
He said the inauguration of the Traditional Council, should be seen to integrate the people of this area especially our revered chiefs to work hand in hand for endless development but not to disintegrate you.
“We should be able to see progress and unity among you the next time we visit this Council” he continued.
He said the Ministry, will provide support by posting staff to assist in the administration of the council.
The occasion also marked the fifth-year anniversary of Paramount Chief, Beyeman Tano Kwaw Benbuin III.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and promoting development in the area, highlighting the traditional council’s achievements over the past five years, including championing development projects in the area.
“As we reflect upon the past five years, we recognize that our journey has been one of growth, challenge, and resilience. Together, we have navigated the waters of change, and it is with a heart full of gratitude that I acknowledge the unwavering support of each and every one of you. Your dedication and commitment to our shared vision have been the cornerstone of our progress” he told the people.
Over the past five years, he said the Council, has made significant strides in enhancing educational opportunities for our youth.
“We have launched initiatives to improve school infrastructure, provided scholarships for deserving students, and empowered our teachers with better resources and training. Our goal is clear: to ensure that every child in Aowin has access to quality education, equipped with the knowledge and skills to thrive in an ever-changing world” he said.
He mentioned that the Council, has embarked on various projects aimed at improving our infrastructure, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
“Aowin is blessed with abundant resources such as forests, rivers, and lands that sustain us. However, these gifts come with a responsibility. We must protect our environment, ensuring that future generations inherit a land that is as rich and vibrant as we have known” he said.
He urged all to be the guardians of the natural heritage. “Let us engage in sustainable practices, educate ourselves and our children about conservation, and work collectively to combat environmental degradation.
He called for collaboration from all stakeholders, for development to thrive in the area.
“As we celebrate this anniversary, let us renew our commitment to education, development, unity, and the protection of our heritage. Together, we can build a brighter future for Aowin, one that honours our past, embraces our present and inspires our future” he concluded.
